Despite multiple release date delays, The Batman Part II is still on the way and has just received a new update from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn.
Despite DC Studios launching a new shared universe, simply dubbed the DC Universe, the company will still make the occasional standalone Elseworlds project that will take place in its own self-contained world. Matt Reeves‘ Batman Epic Crime Saga, currently consisting of The Batman (2022) and The Penguin (2024), is one of those Elseworlds projects that will have no overlap with the DCU.
What is the latest on The Batman 2?
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly about the first DCU movie, the upcoming David Corenswet-led Superman, Gunn offered a brief update on the status of The Batman Part II, sharing, “What Matt’s doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary. We’re supposed to see that script shortly, and I can’t wait.”
Gunn’s latest update may sound a bit familiar to fans, as the DC head has been waiting for Reeves’ script for his The Batman follow-up for some time now. Last month, an insider reported that Reeves was expected to deliver the first full draft of the sequel’s script to Gunn and DC Studios by Memorial Day, which has since come and gone.
Originally, fans would have been heading to the theater this October to see The Batman Part II. However, despite being announced with an October 2025 release date, The Batman sequel has now been delayed twice, first to October 2026 and now to October 2027. With an almost six-year gap between installments, this will be the longest fans have had to wait for a new Batman movie featuring the same actor in the role.
Robert Pattinson, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell are among the actors expected to return for The Batman Part II, reprising their respective roles as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Alfred Pennyworth, and Oz Cobb/Penguin from The Batman (and in the latter’s case, The Penguin, too). Reeves has not disclosed who Pattinson’s Caped Crusader will be facing off against in the sequel, although everyone from Two-Face and Clayface to Hush and the Court of Owls has been rumored.
The Batman Part II is currently scheduled to open in theaters on October 1, 2027.
