Raw sugar futures on ICE erased early gains on Wednesday to close weaker, just above the four-year low in the previous session, while robusta coffee steadied after hitting a 9-1/2-month low on Tuesday.
SUGAR
* Raw sugar SB1! settled down 0.15 cent, or 0.9%, at 16.75 cents per lb. The contract hit a four-year low of 16.66 cents on Tuesday.
* Dealers noted the pause in the Indian monsoon rains and talk that No. 2 sugar consumer China has emerged as a buyer given the recent downturn in prices.
* Sugar sank on Tuesday amid the favourable crop outlook, especially in India and Thailand.
* It has been under pressure since mid-March, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s May forecast for an 11.4 million metric ton surplus in the current 2025/26 season accelerating the downtrend.
* Raw sugar’s price slide has been strong enough to make some mills in top producer Brazil weigh a higher allocation of cane to ethanol production, according to broker StoneX.
* White sugar SF1! fell 1.2% at $468.10 a metric ton.
COFFEE
* Robusta coffee RC2! settled up $8, or 0.2%, at $4,345 a ton, having hit a 9-1/2-month low of $4,235 on Tuesday.
* The conilon (robusta) harvest in Brazil is progressing well, with the weather generally favourable and a large crop widely anticipated.
* Newly harvested crops from Indonesia have also helped to ensure improved global robusta supplies.
* Arabica coffee KC1! rose 1.6% to $3.4615 per lb.
* The USDA projected Ethiopia’s coffee crop will increase to 11.56 million bags in 2025/26 from 10.63 million in the previous season.
* Global exports of green coffee fell 6.8% in April from a year earlier to 10.2 million bags, the International Coffee Organization said.
COCOA
* London cocoa C1! settled up 73 pounds, or 1.1%, at 6,547 pounds per ton.
* The cocoa market remains volatile overall, with price movements largely driven by speculators amid thin trading volumes.
* New York cocoa CC1! rose 1.8% to $9,948 a ton.
* New York cocoa may retest resistance at $9,963 a metric ton, a break above which could lead to a gain into the $10,179 to $10,313 range, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.
