Ahead of the Mean Girls musical remake’s theatrical debut on January 12, original Mean Girls stars Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert recently reunited for a Black Friday Walmart commercial, where they reprise their respective roles as Cady Heron, Karen Smith, and Gretchen Wiener. However, it wasn’t a complete Plastics reunion, as their iconic leader, Regina George, was noticeably missing from the ad.
In a recent interview with Variety, Rachel McAdams finally addressed her absence from the commercial, confirming that she wasn’t really excited about the commercial. However, The Notebook alum clarified that she initially didn’t know about her former Mean Girls co-stars’ involvement until later.
“I don’t know; I guess I wasn’t that excited about doing a commercial if I’m being totally honest,” McAdams said. “A movie sounded awesome, but I’ve never done commercials, and it just didn’t feel like my bag. Also…I didn’t know that everyone was doing it. I would, of course, always love to be part of a Mean Girls reunion and hang with my Plastics, but yeah, I found that out later.”
What to expect in the Mean Girls remake?
“New student Cady Heron is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called ‘The Plastics,’ ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George and her minions Gretchen and Karen,” reads the synopsis. “However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels, she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis and Damian, she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school.”
Mean Girls is directed by Arturo Perez and Samantha Jayne from a screenplay written by Fey, based on Fey’s Broadway musical adaptation of the 2004 movie. It stars Rapp as Regina George, Rice as Cady Heron, Auli’i Cravalho as Janis, Jaquel Spivey as Damian, Jenna Fischer as Ms. Heron, Busy Philipps as Mrs. George, Avantika as Karen, Mahi Alam as Kevin, Christopher Briney as Aaron Samuels, Bebe Wood as Gretchen Wieners, Ashley Park as Madame Park, Connor Ratliff as Mr. Rapp, and Jon Hamm as Coach Carr.
The film is executive produced by Jeff Richmond, Nell Benjamin, Eric Gurian, Erin David, and Pamela Thur, with Fey and Lorne Michaels serving as producers. It will feature music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin.
