Out of Darkness has been on the festival circuit, where it has picked up award nominations and a win for its star, Safia Oakley-Green, in the Breakthrough Performance category.
It represents the debut feature of director Andrew Cumming and screenwriters Ruth Greenberg and Oliver Kassman. It stars Safia Oakley-Green (Sherwood), Chuku Modu (Captain Marvel), Kit Young (Shadow and Bone), Iola Evans (Choose or Die), and Luna Mwezi (The Colony).
Out of Darkness is a survival horror film set 45,000 years ago, and it follows a group of six people who have struggled across the narrow sea to find a new home. They are starving and desperate. First, they must find shelter and strike out across the tundra wastes towards the distant mountains that promise the abundant caves they need to survive. But when night falls, fear and doubt grow as they realize they are not alone. As relationships in the group fracture, one young woman’s determination reveals the terrible actions needed to survive.
To get that authentic Stone Age feel, Out of Darkness was shot on location in the Scottish Highlands and features a bespoke language called “Tola,” developed specifically for the project by a linguist and an archaeologist.
Out of Darkness will head to theaters on February 9, 2024.
