The Hong Kong Arts Development Council will switch its partnership from the M+ museum to the Hong Kong Museum of Art to co-host the Hong Kong pavilion at the 2026 Venice Biennale.
M+, the partner for six consecutive years, said it wishes both parties success in the endeavor.
The Venice Biennale is an international contemporary art event. Since 2001, Hong Kong has participated in the show to showcase the artworks of local artists on a global stage.
The council, or HKADC, has collaborated with M+ to present the Hong Kong pavilion since 2013.
M+ expressed gratitude to HKADC for its “years of trust,” adding that the collaboration has given local artists opportunities to participate in an international art event while showcasing the city’s unique culture and talent.
”Regarding the HKADC’s decision to collaborate with HKMoA for the 61st Venice Biennale, M+ sincerely wishes both parties success in their collaboration,” it said.
”We believe that with the experience and expertise of the HKMoA, it will continue to showcase the outstanding works and achievements of Hong Kong artists on the international art stage.”
M+ noted that artists from the past six editions received extensive media coverage, with several exhibitions recognized as among the best at the biennale.
It also highlighted that participating artists gained numerous opportunities to exhibit at other major international cultural institutions.
M+ said Hong Kong artist Trevor Yeung’s exhibition in 2024 attracted over 200,000 visitors, setting a record for the Hong Kong pavilion.
