A truck driver in Hong Kong had a narrow escape at a wholesale fish market after he accidentally stepped on the accelerator pedal and drove his vehicle into the sea
A police spokesman said the truck, with the 44-year-old behind the wheel, plunged into the sea from the Kwun Tong Wholesale Fish Market on Tung Yuen Street in Yau Tong at 7.21am on Tuesday.
“The driver was able to get out of the truck and swim ashore,” the spokesman said.
The force said the driver, who passed a breathalyser test, complained of a headache and was transported to United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong for treatment.
According to the force, the truck had been parked about eight metres (26 feet) away from the water.
“It was in the process of loading goods when the driver accidentally hit the accelerator pedal,” the spokesman said.
As a result, the truck moved forward and plunged into the sea.
A video clip posted online shows the vehicle’s cargo compartment floating in the water between the edge of the market and a barge. The truck’s driving cabin and trailer had sunk.
Police said officers from the Kowloon East traffic unit were investigating the case.
