Hong Kong issues amber rainstorm signal as Lantau and New Territories see heavy rainfall

Bands of intense thundery showers to the south of Hong Kong have badly affected areas of Lantau Island and the New Territories with the city’s Observatory issuing the amber rainstorm warning at 7.15am on Sunday.

As of 8.40am, over 30mm of rainfall was recorded in these places and the Observatory was evaluating the need for a more serious, red rainstorm warning.

However, the weather outlook for the Dragon Boat Festival on Monday remains sunny and hot.

The city has been under the influence of a trough of low pressure and showers are expected to linger for the rest of the day.

“Members of the public should stay on alert and continue to be aware of the change in weather,” the Observatory said and cautioned people not to swim or engage in water sports outdoors.
