Google Play Store, the primary app marketplace for Android devices, is introducing a new feature aimed at helping users identify apps published by government entities. This move by the tech giant is designed to enhance user trust and combat the proliferation of fake apps masquerading as government-sponsored applications.
Over the past few years, there has been a rise in counterfeit apps impersonating legitimate government services on the Play Store. To tackle this issue, Google has collaborated with 14 different governments worldwide, including the Government of India, to implement measures to verify the authenticity of government-affiliated apps.
Currently, more than 2,000 apps across various countries, such as Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, the United Kingdom, the United States, and India, feature the new government badge. In India, notable apps like Digilocker, mAdhaar, NextGen mParivahan, and Voter Helpline display this badge, providing users with assurance of their legitimacy.
The new badge is prominently displayed just below the app name when users view app descriptions. By tapping on the badge, users can access a pop-up message confirming that Google has verified the app’s affiliation with a government entity. Additionally, the badge is visible in app lists such as ‘Top Charts,’ making it easier for users to identify government-affiliated apps across various categories.
Google has also taken proactive steps to ensure the integrity of apps on the Play Store. Developers are required to provide proof of authorization to store and process government documents, and governments are encouraged to use official email IDs when creating developer accounts.
While Google regularly removes apps with misleading descriptions, icons, and screenshots, the Play Store remains susceptible to fraudulent apps posing as official government services. With the introduction of the government badge, Google aims to empower users to distinguish between authentic and fake apps more easily. By doing so, the tech giant hopes to reduce instances where users inadvertently share sensitive information with malicious actors.
