Gasgoo Munich- China has released a new mandatory national standard governing the safety of automotive door handles, marking a rare but targeted regulatory update as vehicle architectures become increasingly electrified. The standard, GB 48001-2026, was approved on January 28, 2026 by the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardization Administration of China, and is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027.

The move comes against the backdrop of rapid electrification, which has fundamentally altered the design and system architecture of vehicle door handles, particularly with the growing adoption of electronic and hidden-handle solutions. Regulators said the standard was developed to keep pace with these changes, bring greater consistency to product design, and reduce safety risks. The drafting process lasted nearly a year and involved more than 40 domestic automakers, parts suppliers and testing organizations, with over 100 industry experts contributing through multiple rounds of discussion, consultation and technical review.

Under the new rules formulated by China’s MIIT, the requirements apply primarily to door handles used on M1 and N1 passenger vehicles as well as multipurpose vehicles, with other vehicle categories encouraged to follow the same framework.

The standard lays out detailed provisions on scope, technical specifications and testing methods. For exterior door handles, it mandates that each side door—excluding the tailgate—must be equipped with a mechanical release mechanism that allows occupants or rescuers to open the door after an accident.

It also specifies installation zones and minimum hand-operating space. In terms of performance, vehicles using electronically released door locks must still be operable via the mechanical handle without tools after testing, and exterior handles must withstand a pulling force of at least 500 newtons without breaking or detaching.

Interior door handles are subject to similarly specific requirements. Each door must have at least one independently operated mechanical release handle positioned in a clearly visible and unobstructed location that meets defined reach-distance criteria. Permanent markings and operating instructions are also required, with minimum size specifications for both symbols and text to ensure visibility in emergency situations. Strength thresholds differ by design: non-electronic inner handles must tolerate forces of no less than 200 newtons, while electronic button-type handles must withstand at least 50 newtons.

The regulation adopts a phased implementation schedule to give manufacturers time to adapt. New vehicle models applying for type approval from January 1, 2027 must comply with all provisions except those related to hand-operating space, with full compliance required from January 1, 2028. Models that have already obtained type approval will be granted a longer transition period, but must meet all requirements by January 1, 2029.
