The first leg of the visit takes place in China from 7 to 11 April 2026, where the Minister will attend the China Information Technology Expo 2026 in Shenzhen. The event is a major platform showcasing advancements across the ICT value chain, including artificial intelligence, data centres, and next-generation digital infrastructure. Participation in the expo is expected to provide Botswana with valuable insights into global technology trends, policy frameworks, and strategies for expanding broadband access and enhancing digital service delivery.

During the China visit, Minister Tshere is also scheduled to engage with Huawei at its headquarters. These engagements will focus on large-scale infrastructure development, AI integration, and sustainable ICT ecosystems, aligning with Botswana’s national priorities. The discussions are expected to open avenues for deeper collaboration, skills development, and innovation-driven employment opportunities, particularly for young people.

Following the China visit, the Minister will travel to Austria from 13 to 17 April 2026 to participate in high-level meetings under the International Atomic Energy Agency and the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology. In his role as Chair of AFRA, he will lead discussions focused on advancing cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology across Africa.

The Austria leg will also include bilateral meetings with African ambassadors, donor representatives, and senior IAEA officials, as well as keynote remarks at the AFRA Annual Management Meeting. These engagements are aimed at strengthening international collaboration and fostering knowledge exchange in science, technology, and innovation.

Overall, the working visits underscore Botswana’s commitment to accelerating digital transformation, expanding its role in global technology ecosystems, and leveraging international partnerships to drive sustainable economic growth and innovation.
