A memorable evening with mom is set for 6 p.m. May 11 as the Marshall African American Celebration Committee presents its inaugural Mother’s Day Gala at the Marshall Convention Center.
“This event is to celebrate moms and is open to everyone to attend,” said Stacy Adams, executive liaison.
Tickets are on sale now for $50 per person or $1,000 for corporate table sponsorships. Adams said it’s an event not to miss as a beautiful, fun-filled evening is planned to not only celebrate mothers, but also raise college scholarships for deserving students.
“We will have comedian DP Jefferson, Gabriel ‘Saxman’ Johnson, corsages, mimosas, dinner and dancing,” Adams said of the festivities.
“Where can you get this much fun for $50?” she said, reflecting on how reasonable the price is for the unforgettable gala.
The event theme is “Nothing like a Mother’s Love,” inspired by the Biblical scripture Proverbs 31.
“Proverbs 31 gives a description by which to measure all Christian women but at the same time is written for everyone,” said Adams. “Mothers are probably most commonly known as the mediator and peacekeeper of the family. Mothers are usually more nurturing, and the mom’s heartbeat is the first sound the baby hears while growing in the womb.”
Giving the history of the annual holiday, Adams noted that Mother’s Day dates back to 1913, with the first major event being a Women’s Suffrage Parade.
“Anna Reeves Jarvis wanted to raise awareness of the poor health conditions in her community as well as the need for more women’s rights, and later organized a Mother’s Friendship Day, which today is more commonly known as Mother’s Day Out,” said Adams. “Julia Ward Howe wrote the first Mother’s Day proclamation.
“When we think of women activists in history, there’s always the same ones mentioned… Rosa Parks, Harriett Tubman, Dorothy Height and Sojourner Truth,” she continued. “There are many more, such as Daisy Bates and her husband who ran a newspaper and stepped out on a limb to publish all of the names of the schools that were refusing to comply with desegregation; Mamie Till Mobley, whose courage during the brutal killing of her son started a movement motivating people to protest in the streets; Diane Nash was one of the first to organize a sit-in; Maude Ballou was MLK Jr.’s secretary and was instrumental in the formation of the famous ‘I Have A Dream’ speech; Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat 15 years prior to Rosa Parks. There are so many women whose story we will never hear.”
“The Mother’s Day Gala is a great opportunity to celebrate the moms in your life as well as those who have stepped into the role of mother,” said Adams.
Attendees are invited to join the nonprofit organization and deck in their Sunday’s Best as they prepare for an evening of live music by Gabriel “Saxman” Johnson, hearty laughs by comedian DP Jefferson, refreshing mimosas, a delicious dinner and more.
“We would like to thank Rusk Financial and Super One Foods for supporting our organization and we would like to challenge other businesses to support us,” said Adams.
Individual tickets for the Mother’s Day gala can be purchased through EventBrite as well as from any AACC committee member.
“We are a nonprofit organization and all monies raised are going toward our scholarship fund,” said Adams.
