HBO is home to some of the greatest TV shows ever made, and one of its latest releases just broke a 15-year-old viewership record.

Steve Carell’s newest comedy series Rooster hit an impressive milestone, with Variety revealing an average of 6.5 million viewers in its debut season. The stat has been surpassed only by Hung (2009) and Sex and the City (1998).

Rooster is the latest show from Ted Lasso creator Bill Lawrence and Scrubs producer Matt Tarses. It follows author Greg Russo (Carell) and his complicated relationship with his daughter Katie, played by Charly Clive. After a strong reception, HBO recently renewed it for a second season, with many critics hailing it as Carell’s best comedy since The Office.

Following his exit from The Office at the end of its seventh season, Carell has featured in both comedic and dramatic roles across shows like Space Force and, most recently, The Four Seasons. Fans can also look forward to a new release of The Office, which will include over two dozen hours of previously unaired footage.

Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses also serve as showrunners on Rooster. The series is executive produced by Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer for Doozer, alongside Tarses, Jonathan Krisel, Barbie Adler, Annie Mebane, David Stassen, Anthony King, and Carell.

Besides Rooster, HBO will also bring back other popular shows on the network, including The Pitt, The White Lotus, The Last of Us, and Jason Momoa’s On The Roam. Beyond returning hits, HBO continues to invest in new originals and spin-offs, as evident from the recently revealed teaser for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe and a Jodie Comer drama. This August, HBO will be the home for DC Studios’ Lanterns.
