Peretz takes Southampton one step away from Premier League

Bayern Munich loanees remain busy in the final weeks of the seasons throughout Europe. Nübel came up big in a pivotal match with a Champions League spot on the line, Ibrahimović and Heidenheim are still alive, and Palhinha and Peretz are fighting two different battles to help their teams play in next season’s Premier League. See what the rest of the loanees and their teams accomplished this week:

There are 11 players from on loan from the first team.

There are three players from the first team on loan to the German Bundesliga: Alexander Nübel, Arijon Ibrahimović, and Armando Sieb.

Alexander Nübel – VfB Stuttgart

Nübel started for Stuttgart at home against Leverkusen with a Champions League spot on the line. Leverkusen scored a goal in the first minute to make things nervy. Nübel went the rest of the match without conceding again. He made two saves to help his team earn a 2-1 lead at halftime. Stuttgart went up 3-1 in the second half and Nübel kept the guests from scoring again with two late saves to win by that score.

Stuttgart moved into fourth place with the win. They are even on points with Hoffenheim, but have a five-goal advantage in goal differential. They travel to face Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Arijon Ibrahimović – 1. FC Heidenheim

Ibrahimović for Heidenheim in a pivotal match away to Köln. He assisted the opening goal in the eighth minute but the lead was erased just two minutes later. Ibrahimović scored a goal of his own in the 28th minute that would go on to be the winning goal. On the day, he had two shots on goal and created three chances for his teammates to shoot. He was subbed off in the 76th minute with his team up 3-1. Neither team found a goal in the last quarter hour and Heidenheim secured a huge 3-1 away win.

Heidenheim will face Sieb’s Mainz at home on the last day. They need a win and some help to climb out of the drop zone, but the playoff spot is the highest they can reach.

Armindo Sieb – 1. FSV Mainz 05

Sieb was on the bench for Mainz’ home match against Union Berlin. He entered the match in the 81st minute with the match level 1-1. He had one shot attempt — blocked — and completed all but one pass with just eight passes. He was not only unable to help his team find a winner, but also saw his team concede two late goals. They fell 3-1 in what would be a historic result. Union’s manager, Marie-Louise Eta, became the first female head coach to win a match in the top five European leagues.

Mainz will be away to Heidenheim on Saturday with nothing significant to play for.

England – Premier League

There are two players on loan to the English Premier League: João Palhinha and Jonah Kusi-Asare.

João Palhinha – Tottenham

Palhinha started for Spurs and played the full 90 minutes at home against Leeds. He had two shots — one just over the bar and one blocked — but could not create any chances for his teammates to shoot. Most of his contributions came on the defensive side. He had five tackles, one clearance, two interceptions, and five recoveries. Former Bavarian Loan Works alum, Mathys Tel, scored a world-class goal but also made a terrible mistake that led to a penalty, which was scored. Tottenham were forced to split the points with the 1-1 draw.

Tottenham remain in 17th place, now two points above West Ham. Their next match will be to cross-town rivals, Chelsea, on Tuesday, May 19.

Jonah Kusi-Asare – Fulham

Kusi-Asare started on the bench for Fulham at home against Bournemouth, and did not enter the match until the 83rd minute. By the time he entered the match, both teams had a red card and the guests took a 1-0 lead. He had just four touches in the short time he was on the pitch and was unable to help his team find an equalizer. Fulham fell at home 1-0.

Fulham sit in 11th place with two matches to go and have just a slim chance at catching up to European spot. They travel to face Wolves on Sunday.

Daniel Peretz is the only player on loan to England’s Championship.

Daniel Peretz – Southampton

Peretz was in goal for Southampton for the first leg of their playoff semi-finals on Saturday away to Middlesborough. He saved all four shots on goal that he faced to earn a huge shutout. He was one of the only bright spots for Southampton. His teammates did not even record a shot on goal and the match ended in a scoreless draw, with all to play for in the return leg on Tuesday.

Peretz was in goal again at home for the second leg. He faced only three shots on target — conceding a goal in the fifth minute. Middlesborough were unable to really test Peretz for the next 115 minutes. His team equalized in first half stoppage time but neither team found a goal in the second half. The match went into extra time and did not have a breakthrough until 116th minute when Southampton’s Shea Charles put a ball into the box that missed everyone and made it all the way to the back of the net. Peretz just had a couple high balls to come out and claim but was not really tested. He received a yellow for time wasting but helped his team clinch the 2-1 win.

Southampton will play in the playoff final against Hull City at Wembley on Saturday. Winner goes to the Premier League next season.

Bryan Zaragoza is the only player on loan to Serie A.

Bryan Zaragoza – AS Roma

Zaragoza was not in the matchday squad for Roma’s 3-2 win away to Parma. He is listed out with a knee injury until late May.

Roma sit in fifth place, level on points with fourth place and a Champions League spot. They could still get as high as second place with two matches left.

Sacha Boey is the only player on loan to the Turkish Super Lig.

Sacha Boey – Galatasaray

Boey was on the bench but did not make it onto the pitch for Galatasaray’s 4-2 league-clinching win at home over Antalyaspor.

Galatasaray will finish their season away to Kasımpaşa on Sunday.

Switzerland – Super League

Lovro Zvonarek is the only player on loan from the first team to the Swiss Super League.

Lovro Zvonarek – Grasshopper

Zvonarek was suspended for Grasshopper’s 2-1 loss away to FC Zürich.

Zvonarek returned from suspension to play in a key match in the battle for relegation, at home Tuesday against Winterthur. He did not have a shot attempt nor did he create a chance for his teammates to shoot. He also completed less than half of his passes but remained on the pitch for the whole 90 minutes. His fellow loanee and teammate, Jonanthan Asp, helped Grasshopper find a 3-2 comeback win (see below).

With the win, Grasshopper clinch the 5th place spot — relegation playoff — and send Winterthur down to the second division. Grasshopper will finish the regular season away to Lausanne.

Germany – 2. Bundesliga

There are two players from the first team on loan to the 2. Bundesliga: Maurice Krattenmacher and Tarek Buchman.

Maurice Krattenmacher – Hertha BSC

Krattenmacher was on the bench for Hertha’s 2-1 home win but did not make it onto the pitch.

Hertha will finish the season with a trip to Arminia Bielefeld on Sunday with nothing significant to play for.

Tarek Buchman – 1. FC Nürnberg

Buchman was not in the matchday squad for Nürnberg’s 3-0 home win over Schalke 04.

Nürnberg will travel to face Aséko’s Hannover 96 on Sunday.

There are 15 players on loan from the second team.

Felipe Chávez is the only player on loan from the second team to a Bundesliga team.

Felipe Chávez – 1. FC Köln

Chávez was not in the matchday squad for Köln’s 3-1 loss at home against Heidenheim.

Köln will finish their season against Bayern in Munich on Saturday.

Germany – 2. Bundesliga

There are four players on loan from the second team in the 2. Bundesliga: Noël Aséko, Javier Fernández, Grayson Dettoni, and Paul Scholl.

Noël Aséko – Hannover 96

Aséko started for Hannover and played the full 90 minutes away to Bochum. He was unable to contribute anything in the attack but helped on defense with three tackles, two clearances, and five recoveries. He also received a yellow card in the 77th minute for a bad foul. Both teams traded a goal each and the match ended 1-1.

Hannover sit in third place — the playoff spot — level on points with both second and fourth places. They will host Nürnberg in a pivotal match on Sunday.

Javier Fernández – 1. FC Nürnberg

Fernández started and played the full 90 minutes against Schalke 04. He completed 90% of his passes and had two shots off target within a minute — one off the post and one wide. Fernández also helped keep the champions off the board on the defensive side with a tackle, an interception, and six recoveries. Nürnberg were able to pick up a 3-0 home win.

Nürnberg will travel to face Aséko’s Hannover 96 on Sunday.

Grayson Dettoni – SV Darmstadt 98

Dettoni started on the bench for Darmstadt away to Preussen Münster but was called into action very early in just the ninth minute — just a minute after the hosts scored. He completed 93% of his passes and held the hosts to a shutout for the rest of the match. He contributed on defense with a tackle, an interception and 11 clearances — nine with his head! Darmstadt scored an early goal to equalize but also missed a penalty that could have won it. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Darmstadt will host Paderborn for their last match on Sunday.

Paul Scholl – Karlsruher SC

Scholl was on the bench for KSC in their 2-2 draw away to Paderborn.

Karlsruhe will finish their season at home against Bochum.

Max Schmitt is the only player on loan in the 3. Liga.

Max Schmitt – SSV Ulm 1846

Schmitt was not in the matchday squad for Ulm’s 1-1 draw away to Osnabrück.

Ulm has already been relegated. Their final match in the 3. Liga for at least a season will be at home against RW Essen.

There are two players on loan in the Regionalliga Südwest: Benedikt Wimmer and David Emmanuel and three players on loan to the Regionalliga Bayern: Gibson Adu, Richard Meier, and Jason Eckl.

Benedikt Wimmer – SV Sandhausen

Wimmer was on the bench for Sandhausen away to SGV Freiburg and saw them go up 2-1 by halftime. He entered the match in the 90th minute with the match still at that score. He helped his team keep the hosts from scoring and earn a 2-1 away win.

Sandhausen will finish the season at home against FC 08 Homburg.

David Emmanuel – Hessen Kassel

Emmanuel was not in the matchday squad for Kassel’s 2-0 home win against TSV Steinbach Haiger.

Kassel will finish the season on the road to Kickers Offenbach.

Gibson Adu – Unterhaching

Adu was not in the matchday squad for Unterhaching’s 4-0 loss away to Würzburger Kickers.

Richard Meier – Unterhaching

Meier started on the bench away to Würzburger Kickers. He entered the match in the 67th minute with his team down 2-0. It only got worse while he was on the pitch and they fell 4-0.

Jason Eckl – Unterhaching

Eckl was not in the matchday squad for Unterhaching’s 4-0 loss away to Würzburger Kickers.

Unterhaching will finish the season at home against SV Wacker Burghausen.

Switzerland – Super League

Johnathan Asp Jensen is the only player from the second team on loan to the Swiss Super League.

Johnathan Asp Jensen – Grasshopper

Asp started and played the full 90 minutes away to derby rivals, FC Zürich. He assisted the opening goal in the 35th minute. Ten minutes later, the goalscorer received a red card, and Grasshopper went down to ten men right before halftime. The hosts scored two goals early in the second half to take a 2-1 lead. Asp had a chance to equalize when his team earned a penalty in the 66th minute. He put the attempt right down the middle and it was saved. Grasshopper was unable to find a goal and fell 2-1 on the road.

Asp started again for Grasshopper in a key match Tuesday to clinch the relegation playoff spot. The guests, Winterthur, jumped out to an early lead with two goals in the first ten minutes. He had four shots — two on target and two blocked — and created two chances while completing 89% of his passes. His most important contribution was an assist in the 70th minute, which capped off three goals in ten minutes for Grasshopper. They held off their last place guests for the last 20 minutes and won 3-2.

With the win, Grasshopper clinch the 5th place spot — relegation playoff — and send Winterthur down to the second division. Grasshopper will finish the regular season away to Lausanne.

There are two players on loan to the Austrian Bundesliga: Maximillian Hennig and Jussef Nasarawe.

Maximillian Hennig – TSV Hartberg

Hennig was on the bench for Hartberg’s 4-2 home loss against Sturm Graz.

Hartberg will finish in sixth place — with no chance of European qualification — regardless of the result of their final match, away to RB Salzburg.

Jussef Nasrawe – SV Ried

Nasrawe started for Ried at home to Wolfsberger AC. He did not have a shot attempt but created a chance for his teammates to shoot. He did not contribute much on defense either, recording just two tackles and one clearance. He left the match with his team down 1-0 from a first half penalty. Neither team scored another goal and the match ended in a 1-0 home loss.

Ried need just one point to clinch first place in the relegation zone. Either way they have clinched a spot in the Conference League playoff. They will finish the regular season away to Altach.

Magnus Dalpiaz is the only player on loan to Italy’s Serie D.

Magnus Dalpiaz – Milan Futuro

Milan’s U23s fell 2-1 after extra time in the one-legged semifinal in the promotion playoff. Their season ends just short of promotion.

There is one player on loan from the women’s team.

Brazil – Brasileirão Feminino

Ana Guzmán is the only player on loan to Brazil’s Brasileirão Feminino.

Ana Guzmán – SE Palmeiras

Guzmán started for Palmeiras in cup match at home last Tuesday. She did not have any chances to contribute in the attack but helped her team earn a shutout on defense. She had three interceptions, seven clearances, a blocked shot, and five recoveries. She was subbed off in the 76th minute with her team up 5-0 from five first half goals. The hosts were able to hold out for the 5-0 win at home.

Palmeiras hosted Atlético-MG on Monday. Guzmán started again. She had one shot attempt — missed wide — but did not create any chance for his teammates to shoot. She was not as productive as last week’s cup match, but still recorded a blocked shot, an interception, and two recoveries. Guzmán was subbed out in the 69th minute with her team up 2-1. They grabbed a couple more goals and won at home, 4-1.

Palmeiras will travel to face Santos on Thursday.
