Do Ukrainians with biometric passports need a visa to enter England?

Yes, in 2026, Ukrainians will need a visa to enter the United Kingdom. This rule applies to all parts of the United Kingdom — England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Even if you have a biometric passport, the visa-free regime does not apply. For short-term trips — for example, tourism or visiting friends and relatives — you must obtain the appropriate visa.

This means that even to spend a weekend in London or see the Edinburgh Festival, you must obtain permission in advance.

UK visa for Ukrainians: types of visas

Tourist visa. This type of visa is issued for trips for the purpose of recreation, attending cultural or sporting events, as well as meeting friends. It is also suitable for short-term courses (except language programmes). The main focus is on financial guarantees — you need to prove that you have enough funds to live on during your trip.

Family (visitor) visa. Intended for visiting close relatives who are legally resident in the United Kingdom. Such relatives usually include parents, children, brothers and sisters. The peculiarity of this visa is that not only your documents are considered, but also the financial situation of the person inviting you. Important to remember: this visa does not give you the right to long-term residence or employment.

Long-term standard visitor visa. If you plan to travel to the United Kingdom frequently over a period of several years, you should consider applying for a long-term standard visitor visa. It can be obtained for 2, 5 or 10 years, but you are only allowed to stay in the country for a maximum of 6 months per visit. If you are under 18 at the time of application, this visa will only be valid for up to 6 months after you reach the age of 18.

Please note! If your application is refused or you are granted a shorter visa than requested, the consular fee is not refundable. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) reserves the right to grant a visa for a shorter period if it considers that you do not meet the conditions for a longer permit. Your visa may also be cancelled if it is established that you are actually residing in the UK for most of the time and not making short visits.

– Business visa. This visa is suitable for business trips, participation in conferences, negotiations, fairs or exhibitions. It is also often used by scientists and teachers to participate in symposiums or conduct short research projects. It is important to note that during your stay on this visa, you cannot receive payment from British organisations.

Study visa. Issued for short-term language courses in the UK. One of the main requirements is an invitation from a school or educational institution accredited by the UK government. Important: this visa does not allow you to obtain secondary or higher education.

Child visa. Issued exclusively for minors (under 18 years of age). It allows you not only to visit relatives or see the country, but also to study on short-term language courses. When applying, you must choose whether the child is travelling alone or with an accompanying adult (this cannot be changed without reapplying).

– Standard visitor visa. This combines the options of a tourist, family and business visa. It is convenient if you have several purposes for your trip (e.g. business meetings and leisure). This visa is also often issued for a long period. Currently, documents for this visa are submitted through the new online portal of the Border Service, but most applicants still use the old system, where you have to select the category separately.

– Proof of payment of the consular fee.

– An appointment at a UK Visa Application Centre (e.g. in Warsaw or Prague, as the centres in Ukraine are currently closed).

Emigration to the United Kingdom in 2026: available options

Temporary residence permit in the United Kingdom (BRP)

A biometric residence permit (BRP) is a special card introduced in the United Kingdom to confirm the identity of a foreign national and their legal status. The document also helps the government control migration flows and prevent illegal residence.

The BRP is mandatory for anyone planning to stay in the United Kingdom for more than 6 months, for example, for study, work or long-term residence. It can be valid for up to 10 years or for as long as your visa status allows.

Recently, the United Kingdom has tightened its immigration requirements. What Ukrainians need to know — find out at the link.

Who should apply for a BRP?

All non-EU citizens are required to obtain a BRP if they are coming to work, study or live permanently. In certain cases, a visa sticker is issued in the passport instead of a BRP if the applicant’s category is not subject to biometric registration.

What information does the BRP contain?

– Your name, date and place of birth.

– Biometric data — fingerprints and photograph.

– Immigration status and conditions of stay.

– Information about access to public services (e.g. benefits or healthcare).

Your National Insurance number (NI) may be printed on the back of the card. If it is not, you will need to apply for an NI separately, especially if you plan to work, claim benefits or apply for a student loan.

Indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in the United Kingdom

Indefinite leave to remain (ILR) allows you to live, work and study in the United Kingdom without restrictions. This status also entitles you to claim benefits and apply for citizenship in the future.

How can I get ILR?

The ways to obtain ILR depend on your situation. For example:

– Citizens of the EU, EEA or Switzerland can apply under a special settlement scheme.

– Those working in the UK on a work visa usually have to live there for at least 5 years. For some types of visas (e.g. Global Talent, Innovator), the period may be shorter — around 3 years.

Applicants are also often required to prove sufficient income and pass language tests (including Life in the UK).

Main documents for ILR

– Foreign passport.

– Documents confirming legal residence and a long-term visa.

– Confirmation of departures and returns to the UK.

– Proof of English language proficiency and passing the Life in the UK test.

– Proof of income or salary (for employees).

Acquiring British citizenship

Obtaining British citizenship (naturalisation) is the final step for those who have decided to make the UK their home. This process usually requires several years of residence and strict compliance with immigration rules.

To apply for citizenship, you must have a valid residence permit (e.g. indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or EU settlement status). This status must be valid at the time of the citizenship ceremony.

Main documents required to obtain British citizenship

– Internal passport of the country of citizenship and a copy thereof.

– Valid foreign passport and all previous foreign passports.

– Certificate of no criminal record in the country of origin.

– Documents confirming legal residence in the United Kingdom.

– Proof of sufficient income to support yourself and your family without state assistance.

– Certificate from the tax authorities of your country confirming that you have no outstanding debts.

– Medical certificate from a British medical institution confirming your state of health.

– Certificate from the British police confirming that you have no problems with the law.

– Letters of recommendation.

– Four passport-size photographs.

After submitting your application, if it is successful, you will need to go through a citizenship ceremony, after which you will receive a British passport.

Employment in the United Kingdom

In 2026, the United Kingdom has a points-based immigration system designed to attract skilled professionals.

To obtain a work visa, you must earn a minimum number of points based on the following criteria:

– level of qualification for the position;

– availability of an offer from an approved employer;

– salary level;

– demand for the profession;

– level of education;

– knowledge of English.

Do I need a work visa to work in the United Kingdom?

Yes, citizens of Ukraine, like most other countries, need a work visa to work in the United Kingdom. Some groups (e.g. diplomats, certain civil servants, Commonwealth citizens with right of residence) are exempt from the visa requirement.

Types of work visas for the United Kingdom

Short-term work visas for the United Kingdom

– Publicly Authorised Exchange visa.

– Skilled Worker visa.

– Visa for healthcare workers.

– Visa for senior workers or specialists.

– Knowledge of English (not lower than B1).

– Salary of £25,600 or £23,040 (if the profession is on the shortage list).

– Savings (at least £1,270).

The price of long-term visas ranges from £464 to £1,418 plus a medical fee.

How to apply for a work visa to the United Kingdom?

You can apply online or through a visa centre. You will need to prepare:

– A valid passport.

– The sponsor’s reference number.

– Proof of English language proficiency.

– Details of your employer (job title, salary, occupation code).

– Proof of savings.

– A certificate of no criminal record.

Frequantly

asked questions

Can Ukrainians move to the UK in 2026?

Yes, this option remains available, but the conditions have become more restrictive compared to previous years. New applications under special programs are not being accepted as actively, so the main options for moving now involve either existing support schemes for Ukrainians or applying for standard visas, such as work, student, or family visas. It is important to assess the requirements for each type of visa in advance.

Is the Homes for Ukraine program still active in 2026?

The program still exists, but its role is gradually changing. It is now more focused on Ukrainians already in the UK and on supporting their continued residence. Conditions may include additional sponsor checks, restrictions on new applications, and changes to accommodation rules.

How can Ukrainians extend their stay in the UK?

Special mechanisms are in place to extend their status. Most often, this involves applying to extend their residence permit for a specific period. It is important not to miss application deadlines and to meet the requirements, particularly regarding actual residence in the country and compliance with immigration rules.

Can you switch to a different visa after temporary status?

Yes, Ukrainians have the option to change their immigration status if they meet the conditions of another category. The most common options are work visas, if there is a job offer from a British employer, or student visas for study. Such a transition is often a key step for those planning to stay in the country for a longer period.

Can Ukrainians obtain permanent residency in the UK?

The temporary programs introduced for Ukrainians do not, in and of themselves, lead to permanent residency. However, they can serve as the first step toward further immigration. To qualify for permanent residency, you must switch to a different type of visa that allows you to obtain this status after several years of legal residence in the country.
