EUGENE, Ore. (KATU) — As police in Eugene declared a riot on Friday evening, President Donald Trump made a post on social media mentioning the incident and stating the federal government will not intervene.

The Eugene Police Department declared a protest at the Federal Building on 211 East 7th Avenue a riot Friday evening, urging people to leave the area. “Please leave the area now,” EPD stated.

The protest, which began at noon on Jan. 30, saw hundreds rallying against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Trump administration’s deportation policies.

By 6 p.m., tensions had escalated, with some protesters breaching the building, police said.

“Some protesters breached the building and went inside,” EPD stated, noting that civilian staff were present and their presence aimed to de-escalate the situation.

President Trump responded to the incident in a post on social media on Saturday, stating that the federal government would not intervene in anti-immigration riots in blue states unless formally requested.

“I have instructed Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, that under no circumstances are we going to participate in various poorly run Democrat Cities with regard to their Protests and/or Riots unless, and until, they ask us for help,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump also said it is the responsibility of local and state governments to protect federal assets within their jurisdictions, stating, “You must protect your own state and local property.”

He added that federal assistance would be provided swiftly if requested, urging officials to explicitly ask for help. “To all complaining local governments, governors, and mayors, let us know when you are ready, and we will be there — but, before we do so, you must use the word, ‘PLEASE,'” he wrote.
