Every new year comes with big intentions — and the quiet fear that I’ll end up doing exactly what I did last year. This time, I wanted something different; a shift I could actually feel. Coincidentally, it’s the year of the fire horse, a symbol of energy and transformation, so I took that as my sign. I’d already started experimenting with a no-alcohol lifestyle, so trying a new workout routine felt like a natural, approachable next step.

After some research, I landed on the Sweat App ($25 per month), a popular fitness app for women created by Kayla Itsines, famous for her Bikini Body Guide. Known for its guided workouts, community support, and flexible home routines, Sweat promised to make exploring new forms of exercise approachable rather than intimidating — a big selling point for me. Even better, it’s running a promotion where new users get the first two months free, which made it feel like the perfect opportunity to test it out without commitment.

What’s the Criteria For a Good Fitness App?

For me, a good fitness app has to actually help me reach my goals without making me feel lost or overwhelmed. I want variety: strength, HIIT, Pilates, yoga, and clear instructions so I don’t end up guessing when it comes to my form. Tracking progress, seeing results, and having a little community accountability goes a long way in keeping me consistent. Bonus points if it’s easy to use, affordable, and built by real trainers who know what they’re doing.

What I Like About the Sweat App

As someone who knows a lot about running but not much about strength training, the Sweat App felt approachable from the start. I didn’t want to spend $150 a month at a gym where I’d feel self-conscious, so having a beginner-friendly, home workout app was the perfect starting point. I’ve been doing the three-week ab burn challenge, and let me tell you, my abs are definitely feeling it. The step-by-step videos with real people make it easy to follow along, so you’re never left wondering, “What’s a pelvic twist?” Plus, you can connect to Spotify or Apple Music to power through workouts with your own playlist.

The variety is another huge win. Workouts range from 10 to 60 minutes, and you can pick HIIT, Pilates, strength, or even sport-specific routines like tennis conditioning. The app works with you, whether you have weights or not, so it’s flexible enough to fit any level or schedule. On top of that, Sweat includes nutrition guidance and easy-to-follow recipes — from maple thyme roasted carrots to post-workout yogurt bowls — that make healthy eating feel simple and not overwhelming.

The app tracks your progress, lets you plan your workouts by week or month, and even has a community tab where you can cheer on others and read blogs for inspiration. With its intuitive interface, Sweat makes starting — and sticking to — a fitness routine feel totally doable. Honestly, that’s why I’d recommend it: it felt approachable from the very start.

What to Consider Before Trying the Sweat App

The app is subscription-based and geared primarily towards women, so if you don’t identify with that community, it’s worth keeping in mind. It also relies on consistency, so skipping too many workouts may mean you don’t see the results you’re hoping for. Finally, while you can absolutely use Sweat without any equipment, having a set of resistance bands or dumbbells makes the workouts more challenging and effective.

Who the Sweat App Is Best For

This app is best for women who are looking for a beginner-friendly, at-home workout app that they can easily incorporate into their daily routines.

Brewing a Better Half-Gallon Batch
