REDDING, California — Raising Shasta’s annual celebrity boxing match, the Roaring Rumble, is putting a new set of local celebrities head to head in the boxing ring for their second year, with hopes of raising tens of thousands for local youth programs in the process.

For their first year the Roaring Rumble raised just over $94,000 in funding for both the Redding Teen Center, and the Shasta Police Athletic League (PAL) youth boxing program, which operates out of the back space of the teen center. Expanding services across the board. Something they hope to continue as they look to make the event bigger and better this year.

“There is lots of funding for, you know, younger youth. There’s a lot of funding when they go into school, you know, when they’re getting out of school and heading into the workforce,” explained Jenna Berry, Raising Shasta’s Executive Director. “There’s not a lot of funding around teens.“

Berry shared the $94,000 in net funding allowing them to hire on the coaches as full time staff and expand hours they’re available in both the teen center and gym. Now able to provide classes five days a week, with more athletes joining all the time.

It’s really lucky in the way we get to expand and make cool choices for our kids that aren’t dependent on a grant or timelines, and they just get to do really great things with kids that lead to leadership opportunities.

In the first year, there were no weight or height classes, allowing some more diverse matchups. This year with USA Boxing sanctioning the fight there are more requirements for training, and the matchups themselves are much closer in height, weight and age. Coach Daniel Arzate explained they’re making sure their lineup of celebrity athletes are ready to compete.

“80% of it is conditioning,” Arzate said, explaining they are having competitors come in several times a week for training. “My coach used to put us through it, and he would always say boxing is 85 to 80 percent conditioning. So we do a lot of footwork, I play a lot of Salsa music to get them going. I don’t just throw them in the ring, that’s not safe.“

For the second year Raising Shasta is expanding both the list of competitors and facilities they use. Moving from the Redding Senior Center to the Win River Casino. As for competitors they’re going up from eight to twelve, including two local youth boxers. Berry said with how successful last year was, anyone interested in attending should buy early.

“Make sure to get tickets, we sold out last year,” Berry urged. “So make sure you get your tickets early, and get it on your calendar. It’s April 4th, but January 21st, those tickets go live.”

Competitors will be raising funds up until the night of the fight April 4th. When tickets are opened January 21st, they can be found here.

Christian Mercill: A Doctor of Physical Therapy and the owner of Active Physical Therapy, where he helps active adults and athletes recover, rebuild, and stay strong.

Matt Moore: A board certified Emergency Physician serving three local Northstate hospitals, and a USA Boxing certified physician who has spent years volunteering at ringside for youth boxing, supporting fighters and keeping kids safe.

Kilee Holroyd: A Detective with the Sheriff’s Office and working with her K9 partner Toni at her side, Holroyd also serves as Board Chair for Youth Options Shasta and President of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association.

Hailey Devine: Hailey has served in the fire service for more than five years, including four years proudly with the Anderson Fire Department. She currently serves as an engineer.
