Federico Chiesa and Gianluigi Donnarumma were both hailed as Italy’s heroes at EURO 2020, but tonight’s Champions League clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool will highlight how their trajectories have since diverged.
Both the winger and goalkeeper played a crucial role in Italy’s triumphant campaign, earning spots in UEFA’s Team of the Tournament. However, Chiesa’s career has taken an unexpected downturn.

Chiesa struggles, Donnarumma thrives – contrasting fortunes ahead of UCL clash
While he is part of Liverpool’s squad for the first leg of the Champions League last-16, it would be surprising if coach Arne Slot gave him playing time, considering he has only accumulated 25 Premier League minutes all season.
The 27-year-old joined Liverpool from Juventus last summer but has started just three games in all competitions, struggling with injuries and inconsistent form. Linked with a Serie A return in January, a move away from Anfield seems increasingly likely as the season nears its end.

Conversely, Donnarumma has gradually cemented his place as PSG’s undisputed No. 1 since arriving in 2021, despite enduring three managerial changes.
Although occasionally criticised for goalkeeping errors, his starting role has never been seriously questioned, with current manager Luis Enrique considering him central to his project.
Donnarumma’s contract expires in June 2026, and while renewal talks have stalled, recent reports suggest he is open to signing a new deal despite speculation linking him to Inter.
