We consider ourselves extremely lucky to live in Hong Kong, where we have access to so many different types of Chinese cuisine. From spicy Sichuan, Shanghainese delights, Peking duck, and Beijing specials to local Cantonese favourites, there’s an incredible array of delicious dishes to choose from when you’re craving Chinese! To help you pick from the hundreds of restaurants in Hong Kong, we’ve chosen our favourite spots for Chinese cuisine.

Ship Kee – Authentic local food in Wan Chai

Boasting a recommendation from the Hong Kong Michelin guide and two Sassy team members, Ship Kee has been serving up Cantonese classics since 2021. It’s a must try for authentic local cuisine, especially for perfectly glazed, mega-soft char siu (no surprises there — the barbecue chef has over 40 years of experience!) and the salty lobster bites. Ho Lee Fook – Creative Chinese experience in Central

Ho Lee Fook has been a Soho favourite since 2014, serving up inventive takes on Cantonese classics. Veggie Kingdom – Famed vegetarian Chinese food in Tsim Sha Tsui

What sets this plant-based Cantonese eatery apart is its commitment to homemade, all-natural dishes without the usual faux-meats. This small and busy shop is no five-star hotel, but that hasn’t stopped it from being Michelin-recommended every year since 2018. The cold steamed fish dishes are out of this world (we love the threadfin!), as is the baby oyster congee. The food is an authentic peek into traditional Chaozhou cuisine, without breaking the bank.

Peking Garden – Iconic Peking duck house across Hong Kong

Since 1978, Hong Kong’s iconic Peking Garden has been wowing diners with its award-winning Peking Duck — obviously, order this dish! One of our tried-and-true wallet-friendly favourites is none other than Tim Ho Wan. Once known around the world as one of the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurants, yum cha enthusiasts flock to its locations across Hong Kong – and now across the globe, with its several international outposts – for its uncommon balance of taste and value. All the classics are made fairly well, but the baked char siu bun – crisp and crackly outside, jammy-sweet porcine goodness inside – is what it’s all a-bao.

The Chairman was the first Hong Kong restaurant to earn the title of best restaurant in Asia, so it’s no surprise it’s nearly impossible to secure a reservation.
