Romanian coffee roaster Turabo has opened a new €1m ($1m) production facility in Bucharest.

In a press release, Turabo said the site will produce 100 million Nespresso-compatible coffee capsules and one million kilograms of roasted coffee annually. The coffee roaster currently distributes its packaged coffee products in Romania and across 22 European markets via e-commerce and supermarkets and plans to sign its first horeca clients in 2025.

The new production site will also enable Turabo to diversify its product range with up to 20 new capsule varieties and a first specialty coffee line, featuring single origin coffees from Brazil, Colombia, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Ethiopia and Tanzania.

The Bucharest facility uses Loring Smart Roast equipment, designed for fuel efficiency and utilising patented technology to significantly reduce smoke and decrease carbon emissions by up to 80%.

Founded by the Niculescu family in 2002 as a coffee shop, Turabo was for a time Romania’s largest branded coffee chain – reaching 44 outlets in 2009. That year, the business opened its first coffee roastery but a year later closed more than two thirds of its coffee shops. Turabo entered administration in 2011 and shuttered its remaining stores the following year.

However, Turabo’s coffee roaster business has bounced back in recent years, selling more than 10 million coffee capsules and generating over €2m ($2.1m) revenues in 2024. According to its website, Turabo is set to relaunch its coffee shop business with a new site in March 2025.
