Island Shangri-La has launched a new wellness centre in Hong Kong, featuring the city’s only hotel far-infrared sauna, post-partum ‘belly binding’ and Swiss medi-spa therapies. Olivia Palamountain reports
Shangri-La Hotels has unveiled a new wellness centre featuring several Hong Kong firsts at its flagship Island Shangri-La property.
The luxury hotel group’s Yun Wellness centre, located on the eighth floor of the newly renovated hotel, is the first of its kind for the brand and will serve as a blueprint for future wellness spaces across the group’s global properties.
Among its innovations, the centre is the only hotel facility in Hong Kong to house a far-infrared sauna and an FDA-approved Exilis Ultra 360 machine, an anti-ageing skin treatment that combines radio-frequency heating and ultrasound.
The centre offers several distinctive therapies, including a “Chakra Balancing Massage” that uses seven different oil blends to target the body’s energy centres. Another unusual treatment is their “Regenerating Body Treatment,” described as a “facial for your body” that combines dry brushing, body masks, radio frequency and ultrasonic vibration.
The wellness centre has partnered with Swiss brand Dr. Burgener to introduce their medi-spa treatments to Asia for the first time.
These include the signature “Million Dollar Men’s Facial” and a “Lifting and Firming Collagen Facial”, using ingredients such as peptides and hyaluronic acids.
A key offering is the postpartum “belly binding” package, which combines traditional Asian techniques with herbal compresses. The patented treatment, developed in partnership with Restoring Mums, aims to help new mothers recover bodily functions, reduce postpartum stress, speed up recovery and assist with “figure restoration”.
Beyond traditional spa services, the centre offers aerial yoga, singing bowl sessions, and meditation alongside more conventional fitness activities such as HIIT and Reformer Pilates classes.
The facility includes ten treatment rooms, a 28.5-metre outdoor swimming pool, a hair salon and a contemporary gym. Two of the treatment rooms are designed specifically for couples, while another two are dedicated to health consultations and physiotherapy.
Spanish interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán designed the space, which emphasises natural light throughout the facility.
Dr. Tal Friedman, the centre’s Wellness Director, says the facility aims to support “all-round well-being at every stage of life,” from fitness enthusiasts to new mothers seeking community support.
The name “Yun” derives from a 4th-century Chinese poem about longevity and natural beauty, reflecting the centre’s emphasis on holistic wellness through nature-inspired treatments.
