Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge Starts Operations, Boosts Travel Across GBA

We have good news for commuters travelling across the Greater Bay Area (GBA)! Hong Kong travel has become easier as the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge has started operations.

In a strategic move to boost tourism and ease travel within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), this link includes a sea-crossing bridge, an underwater tunnel, and two artificial islands, according to reports. Slashing the travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan from two hours to 30 minutes, the 24-km bridge opened to traffic on June 30, 2024.

Apart from connecting Shenzhen, Zhongshan, and Nansha District of Guangzhou, the bridge houses the only direct expressway connecting Shenzhen, Dongguan and Huizhou with Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Jiangmen.

Many tour and travel operators are offering new itineraries including various destinations in the Greater Bay Area, as travel time has significantly reduced now.

According to a report by TTG Asia, Paul Tse, Deputy Chief Operating Officer of Eternal East (E&E) Cross-Border Coach Management (Hong Kong-Zhongshan route operator), explained that the route takes less than 45 minutes from Hong Kong to Zhongshan and vice-versa.

The report even states that the bus fare has also been reduced — from HKD 110-120 to HKD 90-100.

Regarding the daily traffic, a report by Global Times states the estimate to be around 80,000 to 100,000 vehicle trips. It also said that the toll for the entire route is CNY 66 (HKD 70 or USD 9 approximately).

The sea-link is not only poised to improve connectivity and boost tourism, but enhance business operations as well.
