The Clayface trailer should have DCU fans very excited for the forthcoming movie.
DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Clayface will be released in United States theaters this coming October. Co-written by Mike Flanagan and directed by James Watkins, the movie will star Tom Rhys Harries as the titular Batman villain.
The first trailer for Clayface was shown to those attending Warner Bros. Pictures’ CinemaCon panel last evening. The footage has not been released online at this time; however, several descriptions of the trailer that was shown have since been shared online.
Why should DCU fans be excited for Clayface after the recent trailer?
Per Variety, “Tom Rhys Harries stars as the shape-shifting villain Clayface, whose real name is Matt Hagen. He starts out as a struggling actor whose face is disfigured and then undergoes a scientific transformation that turns his body entirely into clay. The trailer shows Matt sitting in a hospital bed with a bandaged, bloody face. He’s attacked by a knife-wielding assailant and has mysterious chemicals pumped into him, giving him his powers. Matt’s face changes repeatedly, showing him without an eye or mouth at times, and in the final moments he’s sitting in a bathtub and wipes away his entire face. There’s also a shadowy shot of him with a giant, mace-shaped fist, just like how he would pummel Batman in the DC comics.
With there now being much buzz in the air regarding Clayface, we’ve come up with three reasons why DCU fans should be excited to see the movie following the recent CinemaCon trailer descriptions.
It’s Going to Be a Violent, R-rated Movie
Everyone who saw the Clayface trailer at CinemaCon seems to agree that the movie isn’t holding back. James Gunn previously promised fans that this would be an R-rated body horror flick, and it seems as if he did indeed deliver. Get ready for blood, gore, and lots and lots of goop.
We’re About to See a Different Side of DC
DC has made violent, R-rated movies before; however, since the whole Zack Snyder/Justice League debacle, a lot of DC films have gone for a light, comedic tone rather than diving into anything too serious or heavy. Clayface, it seems, isn’t going to be full of laughs. This sounds like a much more adult, somber superhero flick that’ll show off a different side to the DCU.
There’s Always the Chance for *That* Cameo
Clayface is primarily a Batman villain in DC Comics. It stands to reason that fans might hope Batman will show up in a Clayface movie. Time will tell if he actually does — casting Batman in Clayface would also mean casting Batman in the DCU, which is both a big decision and one that’ll likely be hard to keep secret from the public. But, you know, there’s always a chance for a quick cameo or something. Don’t count it out just yet.
