Anne Hathaway reveals she spoke to a pop star during prep for Mother Mary
In preparation for her role as a pop star in her upcoming film Mother Mary, Anne Hathaway opened up about seeking advice from the real-life pop sensation, Charli XCX. Speaking with PEOPLE, the Oscar-winning actress got candid about her learning process and talked about the insight she gained into the mentally and physically demanding nature of the profession.
“The person that I spoke to was Charli,” Hathaway shared. “I wanted to talk to her about the music, she wrote such amazing music that I was going to perform,” she added. The “Von Dutch” singer provides original songs for the movie, along with Jack Antonoff and FKA Twigs.
Hathaway continued, “But I also just had a lot of questions for her about what her life was like, what the experience of being a pop star was.” The actress went on to explain the deeper appreciation she developed for pop stars, praising their discipline and stamina.
“I just realized about pop stars is they’re endurance athletes who can do it all in platform heels,” Hathaway said. “They are the most charming people on the planet, and they have this crazy self-belief, like they’re so driven to share what’s inside of them,” the Devil Wears Prada star added.
Hathaway also revealed that she spoke to the film’s choreographer, Dani Vitale, about the role as well. Vitale has previously worked with many popular artists such as Nicki Minaj, Suki Waterhouse, Jessie Murph, and more.
Mother Mary is an upcoming A24 psychological drama that stars Hathaway as the titular pop singer. The stellar cast also includes Michaela Coel, Hunter Schafer, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, and more.
