Why Carpenter Technology Stock Plunged 24.5% This Week

A quarterly revenue report that missed Wall Street expectations sent Carpenter Technology (NYSE:CRS) tumbling 22.5% this week, overshadowing an earnings beat.

Carpenter Technology stock changed hands at $292.26 as of the close on Friday, Oct. 23, down 24.5% this week from Friday, Oct. 16’s close, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. Over the same period, the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) was flat, and the Nasdaq-100 was down 0.8%.

A revenue miss overshadows record margins

The company reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 sales of $798.2 million, up 8.8% year over year from $733.7 million but below Wall Street consensus estimates of $830.8 million. Diluted earnings per share reached $3.25, topping analyst expectations of $3.04. “The sequential sales decline was driven by the planned maintenance outages we discussed on the last earnings call,” CEO Tony R. Thene said on the conference call. The sharp sell-off leaves the stock down 54.5% (as of the close on Friday, Oct. 23) from its 52-week high of $625.99.

Carpenter Technology manufactures high-performance specialty metals and alloys for aerospace, defense, and medical customers needing materials that withstand extreme heat and pressure. Demand in its core markets remains solid, evidenced by a 49% year-over-year jump in order bookings across aerospace structural and distribution sub-markets.

Management reaffirmed its full-year operating income guidance of $850 million to $880 million and authorized a new $1 billion share buyback program. A top-line revenue miss despite record margins sharpens the tension between Carpenter’s valuation and its ability to maintain rapid sales growth.

What’s next for Carpenter Technology

Investors will watch for sales recovery when the company reports its next quarterly results on Feb. 4, 2027. The industrials stock trades at a trailing price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 25.1, a level that leaves little room for operational delays or missed revenue expectations.

Is Carpenter Technology stock a buy?

While many seem to believe that Carpenter Technology stock isn’t helping them to build a better portfolio right now, they are clearly overreacting. Sure, the company’s failure to meet analysts’ revenue expectations is disappointing, but it’s hardly a red flag that suggests Carpenter Technology stock is a sell. Analysts are hardly perfect, and a company’s inability to meet analysts’ expectations is forgivable when it simultaneously achieves so many successes as Carpenter Technology recently did.

Those reluctant to click the buy button now because of the stock’s 25.1 P/E ratio should recognize that, with respect to operating cash flow, Carpenter Technology stock is a bargain, trading at 17.9 times operating cash flow compared to its five-year average cash flow multiple of 19.3.
