Held on April 19 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the 44th edition of the Hong Kong Film Awards has come to a close, bringing together the year’s defining names and releases. As the awards unfolded, Ciao, UFO emerged as the night’s central title. The film took Best Film, with Patrick Leung Pak Kin winning Best Director, alongside Best Screenplay for Kong Ho-yan and Amy Chin, and Best Supporting Actress for Michelle Wai – a strong showing across major categories that underscores its narrative and creative impact.

In the performance categories, Tony Leung Ka Fai secured Best Actor for The Shadow’s Edge, marking his fifth win at the awards and reinforcing his longstanding presence in Hong Kong cinema. Meanwhile, Best Actress went to Fish Liew for Someone Like Me, her first win in the category, following a series of earlier recognitions for the same role across major local guild and critics’ awards.

Elsewhere, Shu Qi’s win for Best New Director with Girl stands out as a notable transition from acting into filmmaking, while Elizabeth Tang was awarded Best New Performer for Girlfriends, signalling the emergence of a new generation.

On the technical side, Juno Mak’s directed Sons of the Neon Night dominated across eight craft categories, including cinematography, art direction, sound, visual effects and original score, featuring work by the late Ryuichi Sakamoto – marking it as the night’s most awarded film and highlighting its production scale and precision.

Taken together, this year’s results reflect a balance between storytelling and technical achievement, with Ciao, UFO and Sons of the Neon Night shaping the awards in distinct ways. It is a distribution that feels considered rather than divided, reflecting an industry continuing to evolve across both voice and vision.
