President Donald Trump aims to keep tariffs on Chinese goods steady after the Supreme Court knocked down his previous duties, though he may eventually hike levies further on products from other economies, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said.
Greer said Feb. 25 that the U.S. is seeking to maintain levies on Chinese goods within a range of 35% to 50%, depending on the product. Trump is expected to meet with his counterpart Xi Jinping in China in late March or early April to discuss an extension of their nations’ tariff truce.
“We expect that level to remain in place. We don’t intend to escalate beyond that. We intend to really stick to the deal that we had before,” Greer said on Fox Business.
The trade representative said that some countries may end up with a tariff higher than 15% on their exports. That’s the highest rate allowed under the legal authority the administration can use for as many as 150 days. Officials have signaled they’ll use that time to rebuild Trump’s previous tariff regime through other powers, such as Section 301 and Section 232.
“We expect to have continuity in what we’re doing. Even right now we have the 10% tariff. It’ll go up to 15 for some and then it may go higher for others, and I think it will be in line with the types of tariffs we’ve been seeing,” Greer said.
The goal is to “have continuity in this program,” he added.
