According to reports from The Athletic (via AS), discussions over a new deal between Liverpool and Real Madrid target Ibrahima Konate have slowed significantly.
In turn, this has created serious uncertainty around the Frenchman’s long-term future at Anfield.

It must be noted that Liverpool have been engaged in negotiations to tie down one of their key defensive assets for months.
However, despite ongoing dialogue, there has been no breakthrough, and that lack of progress is beginning to raise questions internally.
Konate pushing for a better deal
The issue does not appear to be a lack of intent from the club, as Liverpool still view Konate as an important figure moving forward and are keen to retain him.
But from the player’s side, expectations have changed.
The French international is reportedly pushing for a more prominent role within the squad hierarchy, both in sporting importance and financial recognition.

In simple terms, he wants a deal that reflects his status not just now, but in the future structure of the team.
Real Madrid sensing a market opportunity
Situations like this rarely go unnoticed, especially at a club like Real Madrid. While they are not actively pursuing a deal at this stage, they are closely monitoring how things unfold.

The potential of landing a player of Konate’s calibre without a transfer fee is naturally appealing.
In a market where elite defenders command huge fees, this is the kind of opportunity that aligns with Madrid’s strategic approach.

However, this is not a straightforward target.
Internal doubts remain in Madrid
Despite the obvious appeal of a free transfer, there are reservations within the Real Madrid hierarchy.
The club is not entirely convinced that Konate is the ideal solution to strengthen their defensive line.
Concerns have been raised about consistency, particularly in high-pressure matches.
While his physical attributes and experience are undeniable, Madrid are known to be extremely selective when it comes to defensive reinforcements.
As things stand, his contract situation is doing more to keep him on Madrid’s radar than his on-field performances alone.
