The San Fransisco 49ers have kickstarted their offseason on a positive note, signing free agent Mac Jones on a two-year deal. The 49ers experienced one of their worst NFL campaigns last term, finishing at the bottom of the NFC West division with an underwhelming 6-11 record. As such, the five-time Super Bowl champions have decided to bolster their quarterback department by recruiting Jones in the hopes of securing a better finish in the upcoming season.
Here’s everything you need to know regarding Mac Jones’ transfer to the 49ers.
Mac Jones signs two-year contract with 49ers
The 26-year-old football star has agreed to join forces with the San Francisco 49ers on a two-year contract worth $7 million. The deal would fetch Mac Jones $5 million in guarantees and has the potential to rise to $11.5 million.
Jones arrives at the 49ers on the back of a solitary season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he recorded a total of 10 appearances, including seven starts. Replacing the injured Trevor Lawrence, Jones managed a 65.3% pass accuracy for 1,672 yards and eight touchdowns last term while also pitching in with eight interceptions.
With San Francisco already having the promising Brock Prudy in their ranks, Jones will likely play second fiddle to his quarterback counterpart at Levi’s Stadium. Despite arguably possessing less agility than Prudy, Mac Jones has a much bigger stature than the former and could help diversify the 49ers’ offensive approach come next season.
Notably, Mac Jones was linked with a move to the 49ers during the 2021 draft. San Francisco had already traded three first-round picks to secure the No. 3 overall selection, leading coach Kyle Shanahan to seek a franchise quarterback. Despite considering Jones as a viable option, the 49ers ultimately decided to recruit Trey Lance in his stead.
