Project Hail Mary has made its way to the screen, and along with great critical reception, it seems the film has also earned the approval of Neil deGrasse Tyson. Many sci-fi films struggle with getting the science right and often end up making fictional adjustments. But for Project Hail Mary, it seems to have passed the science test.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller reveal if Project Hail Mary got Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s approval
Project Hail Mary is out in the theaters, and it seems that among the many things that the film got right, science was a big one. Sci-fi movies like this one have a habit of messing up the science bits and compensating with fictional elements.
But it seems that Neil deGrasse Tyson has given the film’s use of science the green light, which means everything is in proper order.
During a conversation with SiriusXM’s Julia Cunningham, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller revealed they had the stamp of approval from Neil deGrasse Tyson.
“At any point was Neil deGrasse Tyson just brought in as a consultant?” Cunningham asked the directors, to which Lord replied, “He was at the party last night.” Cunningham, evidently surprised, asked, “He was?”
“And we all mugged him,” Lord said. Chris Miller added, “We’re like, ‘So how did we do? How did we do?’” Eager for a verdict, Cunningham asked, “What did he say?”
Miller, evidently pleased, responded, “He said we got the science right. We passed the Neil deGrasse Tyson test, yeah.” Cunningham responded, “You know, because don’t get him started on Armageddon,” referencing Tyson’s critique of the way Armageddon handled the asteroid hitting Earth.
Tyson has shared his scientific opinion on other films, like Gravity and Moonfall, even calling the latter the worst for physics in any film. Project Hail Mary boasts no such flaws and is currently playing in theatres across the US.
