LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Influenza, COVID-19, RSV and norovirus are being reported at above-average rates across the United States.
It’s normal to see a spike in respiratory illness this time a year, especially after the holidays, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 35 states have reported “high numbers” of these four viruses.
For the flu alone, over 5 million cases have been reported this season, including 63,000 hospitalizations and 2,700 deaths.
“A big component of them is all a result of having increase proximity, having increase contaminated surfaces, being inside more, being close to one another,” said Dr. Jessica Heckman, a primary care physician at Family Medicine of Lincoln.
Nebraska has one of the highest rates of flu cases in the week ending Jan. 4.
Dr. Eric Johnson from CHI Health Clinic said there are particularly strong strains of viruses this year, which is likely causing higher numbers than normal.
Medical professionals recommend staying hydrated, wearing a mask and, most importantly, washing your hands.
