A KIDNEY Awareness event in Moseley Park, Queensburgh, was a reminder of the importance of prioritising kidney health.
The event on Thursday, March 12, formed part of the global observance of World Kidney Day – an international initiative aimed at raising awareness about kidney health and the prevention of kidney disease.
Hosted by Access Dialysis, the event brought together community members, healthcare professionals, and inspiring speakers. Attendees benefited from free health screenings, kidney health education, and refreshments and wellness goodies.

Sister Paddy Chettiar said the day focused not only on kidney health and early detection but also emphasised the life-saving importance of organ donation awareness.

“Guest speakers shared powerful insights and personal stories, reinforcing how education and community support can transform lives,” she said.
A moving highlight was the testimony of patient Marilee Chananie, alongside Janet Legematte of Hero 777, an organisation focused on raising awareness about organ and tissue donation primarily in KZN.
Guest of honour Vivek Reddy shared his gratitude for living with a transplanted kidney for more than 10 years.

“Our speakers also highlighted simple but crucial lifestyle practices to protect kidney health, such as eat a healthy, balanced diet, monitor and control blood sugar levels, maintain proper hydration, avoid smoking, limit regular use of over-the-counter pain medication, get regular kidney check-ups, especially if you are at high risk (such as those with diabetes, hypertension, obesity, or a family history of kidney disease)
Chettiar extended their gratitude to Access Dialysis for hosting such an impactful event and bringing together voices committed to improving kidney health in the communities.
“Days like these remind us that awareness, prevention, and compassion go hand in hand. Together, we can educate, promote organ donation, and build healthier communities for all.”
