James Milner breaks all-time Premier League appearance record

James Milner has broken the all-time record for Premier League appearances.

Milner, 40, surpassed the milestone previously held by Gareth Barry when he started Brighton & Hove Albion’s game against Brentford on Saturday.

The outing is a 654th in the English top flight of his career.

The midfielder has scored 56 goals and added 87 assists during his 23-year career in the Premier League to date and is a three-time champion.

Milner’s senior debut came with Leeds United in 2002, aged 16, after coming through their academy. He had a brief loan spell at Swindon Town before moving to Newcastle United, and then Aston Villa.

The former England international joined Manchester City in 2010 and spent five seasons at the club, winning the Premier League twice. He signed for Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer of 2015, winning the Champions League for the first time in 2019 and the league title once again in 2020 with the Merseyside club.

Milner joined Brighton upon the expiration of his Liverpool contract in the summer of 2023 and has featured 42 times for the south-coast side. He signed a new one-year contract at the Amex Stadium last summer.

Barry, the previous record-holder, made his 653 appearances for Villa, City, Everton and West Bromwich Albion.

Ryan Giggs, who made all 632 of his appearances for Manchester United, is third on the list.
