Emilia Clarke revealed in an interview with The Wrap that she suffered a rib injury while filming sex scenes for the Peacock series Ponies. “Three men, in a number of hours,” Clarke said of one shoot. “Just keep bringing it — I’m going to sit on this thing, you’re going to bring them in, we’re going to pretend to have sex. I broke a rib that day.” Her co-star Haley Lu Richardson confirmed, “She really did. She’s such a tiny little sensitive body, meant she broke a rib.”
Clarke later clarified that it wasn’t a full break. “It didn’t like, fully break, it just popped out a little bit,” she said. When her doctor asked how she got the injury, she answered, “Sex! Times three!”
In Ponies, Clarke stars as Bea, a Cold War-era CIA agent undercover in 1977 Moscow, alongside Haley Lu Richardson’s character Twila. After their husbands die under suspicious circumstances, the women go undercover as operatives to investigate.
Bea’s mission includes seducing a high-level KGB operative and protecting a former KGB asset. Clarke said this required her to “really make out a bunch.” Richardson recalled the day of the injury, saying she was in hair and makeup as the men came in after the scenes. “I was like ‘So how was it?’ They were like ‘Yeah! (panting),’” she said, laughing.
The injury occurred during an intense day of filming intimate scenes, which Clarke described as physically demanding. Despite the pain, Clarke continued filming and later assured that her rib was “just about healed.”
Ponies is now available for streaming in full on Peacock. Clarke and Richardson shared these stories during interviews promoting the show. They reflected on the physically challenging nature of certain scenes.
