While doing promotions for her upcoming movie, Materialists, which also features Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, actress Dakota Johnson has disclosed to Amy Poehler how she prepares for intimate scenes in her films. As opposed to the common perception, she does not need much time to ready herself for such sequences and instead, spends time understanding the character she is playing to do justice to the sex scenes.
So, here’s what the Fifty Shades of Grey star had to say about her approach to shooting intimate sequences.
Dakota Johnson says she doesn’t have to prepare for sex scenes
During her recent appearance on Amy Poehler’s podcast, the 35-year-old actress was asked about her take on doing intimate scenes.
In response, Dakota Johnson jokingly stated on the Good Hang podcast how she’s always pumped to film such parts. She noted, “I don’t have to. I’m, like, always psyched up for sex.” Understandably, Poehler burst out laughing at her guest’s witty reply.
“Psyched up? Is that a thing? Let’s go to pound town,” Johnson continued. She then shared her experience of working with an intimacy coordinator for the first time for a recent project. “It was so cool because I’m so used to, just you know, like, it’s a sex scene. It’s not sexy. It doesn’t feel good,” the actress stated.
Moreover, Johnson later explained the intricacies that one must understand before jumping into a sex scene. She remarked, “First, it depends on who the character is and who the character’s supposed to be to the audience. Is she like a super idolized hot girl? Is she a housewife? Is she lonely? Is she scared? Is she conservative? Certain prep would go into it.”
Additionally, Dakota Johnson credited her mother’s parenting for her candid approach to such scenes. She shared, “My mom raised me to be really proud of my body and love my body. So I’ve always felt so grateful for that, especially in my work, because I can use it and it feels real. She was very honest and open about body stuff, like getting my period. She also talked to me about sex and how precious and important it is.”
Next up in Johnson’s filmography is Celine Song’s Materialists, which premieres in theaters on June 13, 2025.
