Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool – Hughes makes crucial block to deny Szoboszlai

Just as I write that, a crucial block from Will Hughes as the midfielder gets in the way of a Dominki Szoboszlai effort.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

A frustrating half for Liverpool as we enter five minutes of stoppage time at the end of the first half.

The Reds are still yet to have a shot on target and have had two major scares.

Watch the decision to overturn Crystal Palace’s penalty

Did take a while to reach the decision to overturn the penalty decision.

Watch the incident below.

Did Andy Madley get the decision right? I think so.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

Crystal Palace are continuing to look dangerous on the break and with Clyne the latest to get forward and send a cross into the box.

He is able to pick anyone out with Liverpool looking to spring a break of their own.

Joel Ward stops the move with a foul and goes into the book.

VAR REVIEW: NO PENALTY

Referee Andy Madley was invited to check the monitor.

Will Hughes barged into the back of Endo in the build-up to the penalty.

After around a three minute delay, Madley decides to overturn the penalty due to the foul on Endo.

Van Dijk’s yellow card for his foul in the area is also cancelled as a result.

The Palace fans are singing about VAR in unfavourable terms, but that definitely looks the right decision.

PENALTY TO CRYSTAL PALACE

Andy Madley points to the spot after a Virgil van Dijk foul on Odsonne Edouard in the box.

This is going to get checked for a foul in the build-up.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool – Alisson makes stunning stop to deny Lerma

A stunning save from Alisson on his return to stop Palace from taking the lead.

It is from another Palace counter attack and Jordan Ayew curls a cross to the back post.

This time his cross is to perfection and finds the unmarked Jefferson Lerma, who hits it first time.

Alisson reacts superbly to turn the shot onto the post and Liverpool scramble the ball clear.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

Will Hughes swings a corner into a packed Liverpool area with Joachim Andersen the first to make contact.

Virgil van Dijk wins the second ball and Trent Alexander Arnold nearly launches a Liverpool counter attack.

You sense Palace will need to make the most of the set pieces they win today.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool are dominating possession with Crystal Palace staying strong in their defensive shape.

The Eagles get a chance to break forward after winning back possession in midfield.

Jordan Ayew’s cross is easily cleared.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool – Ward alert to deny Nunez at the far post

Good defending from Joel Ward at the back post for Palace.

The captain, making his 350th appearance for the club today, gets ahead of Darwin Nunez to head behind at the expense of a corner.

The cross had dangerously deflected towards Nunez off Marc Guehi.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

Crystal Palace appeal for a handball after their first corner of the match, but Liverpool are not waiting around to find out.

The Reds sweep forward with Mo Salah breaking down the right.

Salah swings a cross in towards Darwin Nunez but it is easy enough for Sam Johnstone to come out and claim.

Nunez might have been offside anyway had he reached it first.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

Crystal Palace load up the box with Joel Ward launching a ball forward from a free kick.

It is well defended by Liverpool, as the Reds defence stays strong under the aerial test.

Alisson then gets his first touch on his return to the Liverpool side.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

The first shot of the day is an ambitious one.

Kostas Tsimikas winds one up from range but his left footed effort is well off target.

Liverpool are in their green and white away kit today incidentially.

KICK OFF: Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

Referee Andy Madley gets proceedings underway at Selhurst Park.

Can Liverpool go top of the Premier League?

The teams are out at Selhurst Park

Both teams are out on the pitch with kick-off moments away.

Here is a reminder of the team news for both sides.

Crystal Palace: Johnstone; Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Clyne; Lerma, Hughes, Schlupp, Richards, Ayew, Edouard.

Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Endo, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Diaz, Salah, Nunez.

Jarrell Quansah partners Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool’s defence this afternoon.

Van Dijk has backed the 20-year-old to step up after confirmation Joel Matip has ruptured his ACL and will likely not play again this season.

‘Every time he has had the opportunity so far he has done well,’ Van Dijk said. ‘When the moment is there for him – like every other player who will come in when we rotate or have injuries or suspensions – they have to be ready.

‘That goes for him as well. We still have Ibou, Joey, but Jarell is a very good option as well. In general, for all the younger generation, if you are close to the first team and training with us, you have to soak everything in. And he is doing well.’

Mo Salah looks to bring up a double century for Liverpool

Mo Salah is just one goal away from becoming just the fifth Liverpool player to score 200 for the club.

Ian Rush, Roger Hunt, Gordon Hodgson and Billy Liddell are the only other men to reach a double century for the Reds.

Salah has a good record against Crystal Palace, scoring seven in 12 appearances against the Eagles.

Mail Sport’s Sami Mokbel has reported that Hodgson’s position at Crystal Palace is under scrunity amid the recent run of results and discontent from the fans.

The preferred scenario for key figures at Selhurst Park has been for Hodgson, whose contract expires in six months, to see out the season ahead of appointing their next boss in the summer.

Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper, a long-term managerial target for Palace, remains on the club’s radar and has significant backing at the south London club.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna is also admired at Palace, but chances of the former Manchester United assistant walking away from his current side’s Championship promotion challenge appear limited.

Hodgson’s comments come after the Crystal Palace boss issued an apology to supporters in his pre-match press conference.

He made the apology after claiming fans had been ‘spoiled’ after seeing his side booed off in midweek.

Hodgson said he ‘bitterly regrets’ his choice of words.

‘I feel the pressure for other people’ – Hodgson

Roy Hodgson has just been speaking on TNT Sports ahead of kick-off, with the Crystal Palace boss admitting he still feels the pressure despite being 76.

Hodgson’s side were booed after their defeat against Bournemouth in midweek, with the Eagles now on a run of only one win in eight Premier League games.

‘You feel the pressure for the players in particular and the club, the people at the top of the club because they care so much themselves,’ Hodgson told TNT Sports.

‘You perhaps don’t maybe feel as sorry for yourself as you may have done when you were younger and your career was on the line.

‘I would have to admit that for myself I don’t feel the enormous pressure any more, but I feel the pressure for other people.

‘When the game comes around I am as anxious to win it and as nervous as I have always been. All the time that continues I can continue. If I ever lose that I will know that I don’t have it in me anymore to do the job.

‘That isn’t the case at the moment.’

Jurgen Klopp insists Roy Hodgson was an inspiration to him when he first started in management – but he always asks the Crystal Palace boss why he is still in the dugout at the age of 76.

Klopp’s tongue-in-cheek comments came after the Palace boss has faced intense scrutiny for a run of just one win in the last eight games.

‘When Roy was in Switzerland, he implemented a 4-4-2, so my former manager Wolfgang Frank showed us a lot of videos of him,’ said Klopp. ‘It was Ariggo Sacchi and Roy Hodgson. That was the first time he crossed my way.

‘I am really pleased I met him here in the Premier League because he’s an outstanding person and a really nice man. When I see him I ask him, “What are you doing here?!” But he looks happy, enjoying it.

TEAM NEWS: Alisson returns for Liverpool but Alexis Mac Allister drops out through injury, with Michael Olise only on the bench for Palace

Two changes for Palace with Michael Olise only fit enough for the bench as the midfielder’s minutes are managed after returning from injury.

Will Hughes comes into the starting eleven, while former Liverpool full back Nathaniel Clyne comes in for the injured Tyrick Mitchell.

Crystal Palace: Johnstone; Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Clyne; Lerma, Hughes, Schlupp, Richards, Ayew, Edouard.

Subs: Matthews, Tomkins, Olise, De Oliviera, Mateta, Ebiowei, Ahamada, Riedewald, Ozoh.

Alisson returns for Liverpool as one of five changes to their 2-0 win over Sheffield United in midweek.

Jarrel Quansah partners Virgil van Dijk in defence after Joel Matip’s ACL injury.

Ryan Gravenberch, Kostas Tsimikas and Darwin Nunez come into the side, with Alexis Mac Allister missing out through injury.

Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Endo, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Diaz, Salah, Nunez.

Subs: Kelleher, Gomez, Konate, Jones, Gakpo, Elliott, Doak, McConnell, Bradley.

Could Alisson return for Liverpool after a hamstring injury?

Around 10 minutes until team news will be revealed.

Jurgen Klopp revealed goalkeeper Alisson could return after returning to training following a hamstring injury.

Alisson has been absent for Liverpool’s last three matches.

Can Palace dent Liverpool’s title hopes again 10 seasons on from the ‘Crystanbul’ classic

Liverpool’s visits to Selhurst Park have become a fixture broadcasters tend to snap up every season following the famous ‘Crystanbul’ match during the 2013-14 season.

Palace memorably staged a comeback from 3-0 down to secure a 3-3 draw and effectively end Liverpool’s title hopes.

The Reds have dominated against Palace in recent years and are unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League matches against the Eagles.

However both meetings last season ended in draws, with the match at Selhurst Park ending goalless.

Jurgen Klopp has not been shy in his dislike of the Saturday lunchtime slot which Liverpool have found themselves in on numerous ocassions in recent years.

Klopp was particuarly irritiated in midweek when Amazon Prime presenter Marcus Buckland made the light hearted comment that he was back in his ‘favourite kick-off time’.

The Reds boss hit back by claiming the presenter’s comments were ‘disgraceful’ in a tense exchange.

Good morning!

Welcome to Mail Sport’s live blog as Crystal Palace host Liverpool in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off.

There is plenty on the line as the weekend’s Premier League action kicks off at Selhurst Park.

A victory would take Liverpool to the top of the table – at least until Arsenal face Aston Villa later tonight.

Can Crystal Palace ease the growing pressure on manager Roy Hodgson?

Stick around for the team news and all the updates from the 12.30 kick-off.
