Cruel Intentions has been canceled by Prime Video after its Season 1 was released on November 21, 2024. The series is a TV adaptation of the popular 1999 movie of the same name. Prime Video cancels Cruel Intentions after one season
The streaming giant Prime Video has decided not to renew Cruel Intentions for a sophomore season.
According to a report by Variety, the makers didn’t disclose the reason behind the sudden cancelation of the show yet. Based on the 1999 movie, which was also an adaptation of the novel Dangerous Liaisons, the Prime Video series wasn’t able to make a good impression upon its release.
After its debut on the streaming platform, Cruel Intentions got negative reviews from critics and earned a score of 24 percent on Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. On the other hand, it received 81 percent on the Popcornmeter.
Roger Kumble, who served as the director and writer of the film, was the producer of the Prime Video show. Additionally, Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher were the writers, executive producers, and showrunners of the TV series.
In December 2024, Goodman shared her thoughts on the future of the series. She told The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s such a weird world of television where you don’t know how many seasons you’re going to get, and you don’t know how many episodes those seasons are.”
As per the official logline of Cruel Intentions, it revolves around Caroline and Lucien, who are trying to stay at the top of the social hierarchy. These step-siblings decide to seduce Annie Grover, the daughter of the US VP to maintain power.
Following Season 1’s release, Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher also teased their plans for future seasons. “I think in an ongoing series, and we really want it to be an ongoing series, that love triangle and those relationships have just begun, and so we’re not ready to take him out of them,” Goodman told Entertainment Weekly. However, as of writing, the show’s second season stands canceled.
