Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is likely to miss the rest of the regular season and could have shoulder surgery in the coming days, owner Jim Irsay has revealed.

Richardson, the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft, hurt his right throwing shoulder during Indianapolis’ win over the Tennessee Titans in week five. He suffered an AC joint sprain.

‘The most likelihood is he’s probably going to be gone for the year,’ Irsay told EPSN. ‘It’s not definite but (he) probably misses this year and we’re going to have to contend with that factor.’

It still needs to be determined whether Richardson’s shoulder problem requires surgery or whether it can be healed through rehab alone.

‘There’s debate going (on), but it’s probably going to lead toward surgery in the next week or so,’ Irsay added. ‘We’re just trying to figure out exactly how and when and what we want to do and what Anthony wants to do.’

It’s said the final decision will be left to Richardson but the Colts are treating the quartback’s injury with caution given his long-term importance to the franchise.

Richardson was placed on injured reserve ahead of Sunday’s defeat by the Jacksonville Jaguars. That result took their record to 3-3, with the Cleveland Browns visiting Lucas Oil Stadium this weekend.

‘We think we have an outstanding football team still,’ Irsay insisted.

The No 4 overall pick hurt his shoulder late in the first half against the Titans, when he fell awkwardly to the ground on a 4-yard run with two defenders draped around him.

Richardson stayed down for several minutes before walking slowly from the field to the injury tent with his shoulder drooped. Several minutes later, he came out of the tent and walked with the team’s medical personnel into the locker room.

It was his third injury in just five NFL games. He previously hurt his right knee in the season opener and sustained a concussion against the Houston Texans in Week 2.
