Andor creator Tony Gilroy knew that inserting Cassian into a romantic relationship with Bix Caleen would upset fans of Jyn Erso from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
What did Tony Gilroy say about Cassian Andor’s relationship?
In Rogue One, Cassian and Jyn never acted on their feelings for one another. Cassian and Jyn share a touching moment in the elevator, as they stare into each other’s eyes while they head to the beaches of Scarif. The duo then dies in each other’s arms moments later.
Andor creator Tony Gilroy knew the risk he took when writing Cassian into a relationship with Bix. To this day, Gilroy sympathizes with Jyn fans.
“I felt bad for the people who had invested so much time in the fan fiction and stuff like that. The people who really had gone deep on it,” Gilroy told Collider in a recent interview. “It’s not considered canon, and it’s not something I have to pay attention to, legally, within the order, but people worked hard on that stuff, and it meant a lot to them. You don’t want to trample on somebody’s flower garden, you know? But I have to do what I have to do. I’m sure there’s somebody who will never get over that. I apologize. I really do.”
That’s not to say Gilroy isn’t a fan of what happened between Cassian and Jyn in Rogue One. When revisiting the movie, Gilroy was “pleased” with how the elevator scene turned out. However, he eventually “didn’t care anymore” and moved on to Cassian’s past life with Bix.
“I mean, they’re both pretty sexually liberated in their way,” Gilroy says about the relationship between Cassian and Bix. I think that first kiss they had, I think the first person they ever slept with is each other. Who knows how old they were on Ferrix? Probably very, very young. And over time, they were together and not together.”
Gilroy added, “I think they have a very healthy idea of what the different calibrations of love are.”
Andor Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Disney+.
