A Minecraft Movie’s Box Office Holds Strong; The Amateur Beaten by The King of Kings

With A Minecraft Movie holding the top spot for a second weekend and four new wide releases entering the market, the box office landscape continues to shift rapidly. While the video game adaptation maintains its momentum, The King of Kings exceeded expectations with a record-setting debut for an animated biblical film. Meanwhile, The Amateur, Warfare, and Drop launched with solid numbers, fueling discussions around genre diversity and audience turnout.

A Minecraft Movie retains number one box office spot

Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie remained at the top of the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend, earning $80.6 million from April 12–14, 2025. This marks a 50.5% drop from its $162.7 million opening. Domestically, the film has grossed $280.9 million, while its global total stands at $550.6 million.

The film opened on April 4, 2025, in 4,263 theaters and expanded slightly to 4,289 theaters in its second weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie ranks among the top second-weekend performances for a video game adaptation. Warner Bros. projects a long domestic run, with some estimates suggesting it could approach $500 million.

The King of Kings surprises The Amateur, Warfare and Drop

Angel Studios’ The King of Kings debuted at second place with $19.05 million from 3,200 domestic theaters (via Deadline). This set a new record for the highest U.S. opening for an animated biblical film, surpassing The Prince of Egypt’s $14.5 million in 1998. Its worldwide total stands at $19.05 million.

20th Century Studios’ The Amateur, starring Rami Malek, opened in third place with $15 million domestically from 3,400 theaters. It earned $32.2 million globally. The film received a B+ CinemaScore and a 77% audience approval score on PostTrak.

A24’s Warfare ranked fourth with an $8.3 million opening from 2,670 theaters. The film’s global debut matched its domestic performance, totaling $8.3 million. It received an A- CinemaScore and 90% audience positivity on PostTrak.

Universal/Blumhouse’s Drop opened in fifth place with $7.5 million from 3,085 theaters. Its global total is also $7.5 million. The film’s audience was 53% female, with a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 83%. It received a B CinemaScore.
