The Boys Boss Explains Why Its Most Tragic Death Was Important

The Boys killed off one of its primary members in the penultimate episode this week, pushing shocked fans to mourn a valuable member of the team. As the series heads into its finale, showrunner and head writer Eric Kripke has commented on why the loss was necessary.

How Major Avengers Villain’s Death Sets Up Marvel’s Biggest Event of 2026

Eric Kripke addresses Frenchie’s death in The Boys Season 5

In an interview with ScreenRant, Kripke addressed Frenchie’s death towards the end of episode 7 and what it means for the finale.

“I can’t say much without spoiling it,” said Kripke. “What I will say is that it’s the biggest blow the Boys have suffered, and it’s just as they’re heading into the finale in their final battle with Homelander. The question really becomes: can they stand back up and pull together? Because there can be no victory without sacrifice. There can be no wins without losses. I think people feel that in their bones, and I think everyone’s experience with victory is that it never is easy. When they feel something’s too easy in TV and movies, the audience smells something false there. My hope is, heading into the finale, that it’ll feel earned. The message, if the show has any message, is to keep getting back up. And that’s what the Boys have to do.”

Frenchie wasn’t the only casualty in the episode, as Homelander also killed another powerful figure. With that, the heroes are now at their weakest, though their risky plan to kill Homelander has been revealed. However, many fans, including some of the show’s stars, have voiced frustration at the slow pace of season 5.

The Boys will return for its final episode next week on May 20, 2026, on Prime Video. The platform has also announced that it will release The Boys’ final episode in 4DX theaters. The finale is expected to finally reveal whether the Boys can beat an immortal Homelander.

The Boys series finale will likely conclude Hughie, Butcher, Annie, Homelander, and Soldier Boy’s stories, but the franchise will continue to live through spinoffs like Vought Rising.
