Oil bounces after its worst 3-day drop since 2021, but energy stocks aren’t joining in

Almost everything on Wall Street is in the red Thursday, but oil is one of the few exceptions. WTI crude (CL=F) is up about 2% after its worst three-day drop since late 2021, and energy stocks aren’t joining the bounce.

WTI futures fell 15% from their Oct. 30 settle above $104 to a Nov. 4 settle near $88, the lowest since Aug. 31. The steepest leg came Nov. 4, after Democrats won control of Congress and Vice President JD Vance posted on X, “The reason we lost is the war.”

It’s been the pattern all year.

Oil and the S&P 500 (^GSPC) have moved in opposite directions more often in 2026 than in any year since at least 2001, according to Yahoo Finance calculations. The correlation between their daily moves is -0.44, where -1 would mean they always move in opposite directions. The previous low was -0.25 in 2003, the year the US invaded Iraq.

Bar chart of the yearly correlation between daily oil and S&P 500 moves from 2001 to 2026. It was positive every year from 2008 to 2025, peaking at +0.65 in 2010. 2026 is at -0.44, below 2003's -0.25.

With the Iran war driving crude, rising oil has been bad news for stocks, and falling oil good news. On Nov. 4, the S&P 500 rose more than 1.5% as crude fell more than 8%. Thursday is running in reverse.

Energy stocks aren’t playing along. The Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) is slipping and is on track for its lowest close since Oct. 7 as Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX) barely move and Baker Hughes (BKR) and Williams (WMB) fall with the market.

XLE is still 2026’s best-performing sector, up about 45% this year through Nov. 4, but it fell 9% from its Oct. 30 high in three sessions.

Crude still carries plenty of war premium. WTI is up more than 50% this year, and Iran’s crude exports “have fallen from roughly 1.8 million barrels per day to essentially zero,” Apollo chief economist Torsten Sløk wrote in a Nov. 4 note. A close below the Nov. 4 settle would put oil at its lowest since August. (Disclosure: Yahoo is a portfolio company of funds managed by affiliates of Apollo Global Management.)

Washington’s appetite for the war may count for more than any level.

“The vice president probably is speaking for at least a good portion of the Republican caucus,” Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, said on Yahoo Finance’s morning show Thursday. “JD Vance said the quiet part out loud.”
