Prediction: Nov. 6 Will Be a Huge Day for the Stock Market

Over the last few years, the stock market has become concentrated among a relatively small cohort of technology companies. These companies have an unusually strong influence over the direction of the S&P 500 (^GSPC +1.58%), making investor sentiment toward artificial intelligence (AI) particularly important to the broader market’s performance.

As of Nov. 3, a little more than one-third of the S&P 500 is composed of the “Magnificent Seven” stocks — Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Tesla. This concentration is important heading into Friday, Nov. 6, when two potentially market-moving events are scheduled.

The October jobs report is scheduled to publish before the opening bell, while billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk will take the stage at a major investment conference later that afternoon. Here’s why I’m predicting Nov. 6 could become a consequential trading day on Wall Street.

The October Jobs Report could set the tone on Wall Street

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will release the October employment report at 8:30 a.m. ET on Nov. 6. This report provides investors with several important economic indicators, including nonfarm payroll growth, the unemployment rate, and changes in average hourly earnings. These figures can offer clues about the health of the American economy and the Federal Reserve’s next moves on interest rates.

A resilient labor market could suggest that economic growth remains intact. However, unexpectedly strong wage growth or hiring could raise concerns that inflation will remain elevated and that interest rates will remain higher for longer than anticipated.

By contrast, a moderate slowdown in employment growth could support the idea that the Fed may keep interest rates steady, potentially benefiting growth stocks. A particularly weak jobs report, however, would likely trigger concerns about an impending recession.

Musk could reignite enthusiasm for AI stocks

Later that afternoon, Elon Musk is scheduled to participate in a fireside chat with mutual fund investor Ron Baron at his annual investment conference. It’s no secret that Musk has an unusual ability to generate hype around emerging technologies. Whether he’s discussing electric vehicles (EVs), autonomous driving, humanoid robots, or AI, Musk’s predictions generally attract considerable attention from investors. I suspect his appearance at Baron Capital’s conference won’t be any different.

There’s a good chance Musk will use the conference to discuss Tesla’s ambitions in autonomous driving and its Optimus robot, as well as Space Exploration Technologies‘ launch and satellite businesses. The deeper idea here is that this conversation could extend into semiconductor manufacturing, advanced memory, computing capacity, and the possibility of deploying AI infrastructure in space.

These subjects aren’t exclusive to Musk’s companies. They directly intersect with the businesses of Nvidia, Micron Technology, Advanced Micro Devices, Anthropic, OpenAI, and other companies supplying infrastructure to support the AI revolution.

For example, optimistic commentary on computing requirements could strengthen expectations for demand for Nvidia’s accelerators, Micron’s high bandwidth memory (HBM), and the underlying networking technologies that power AI data centers.

All this is to say that an ambitious forecast about the future scale of AI infrastructure could be enough to renew enthusiasm for the companies already benefiting from the industry’s expansion. Since the S&P 500 is so heavily weighted toward AI stocks, a meaningful rally among its largest components could help lift the broader index.

Will the stock market soar on Nov. 6?

The interesting aspect of Nov. 6 is that these two events can influence the stock market through entirely different channels. The jobs report will provide investors with new information about economic growth, employment conditions, and the potential direction of interest rates. Meanwhile, Musk’s words could influence expectations around the long-term prospects of the market’s biggest catalyst right now: AI infrastructure.

Under one scenario, the employment report could show a healthy economy while inflation moderates. Investors might interpret those figures as favorable for earnings and future monetary policy. If Musk subsequently delivers an optimistic outlook for the AI environment, his remarks could reinforce an already positive trading environment.

That combination could be a tailwind given the market’s recent volatility. Technology stocks endured a nasty sell-off in October as investors questioned the unprecedented sums being committed to capital expenditures (capex) and how quickly those investments would generate returns.

Of course, the opposite scenario is a real possibility. A disappointing employment report could easily overshadow Musk’s comments, while investors dismiss any ambitious technology forecast that lacks concrete financial commitments.

At the end of the day, Nov. 6 brings together two interesting catalysts with the potential to influence both the macroeconomy and technology components of the stock market. Given the S&P 500’s high concentration in technology stocks, I would not discount the possibility that a favorable jobs report, followed by an enthusiastic presentation from Musk, could produce a meaningful rally.

For now, smart investors should prepare for volatility no matter what. I suspect Friday will deliver one of the more interesting trading sessions of the month.
