A cultural and tourism promotion event for the Chaoshan region, comprising the cities of Shantou, Chaozhou and Jieyang in eastern Guangdong province, took place in Hong Kong on Tuesday.
Under the theme “Rooted in Kinship, Flavored Chaoshan: Embracing APEC, Exploring Chaoshan”, the event, hosted by the Shantou-Chaozhou-Jieyang Tourism Alliance, highlighted the region’s coastal and mountain landscapes, historical and cultural heritage, gastronomy and intangible cultural heritage.

Rousing Yingge dance routines unfolded for attendees, while set tasting stations and craft‑demonstration booths showcased Chaoshan’s living culinary and folk heritage. The Handbook for Hong Kong and Macao associations visiting Chaoshan was also launched at the event, offering one-stop travel guidance for Hong Kong and Macao compatriots and visitors.

Targeting Hong Kong’s tourist market, the event led to a series of cooperation agreements among organizations from Chaoshan and Hong Kong, as it seeks to capitalize on Hong Kong’s status as an international tourism hub to attract visitors.

Among the agreements, Chaoshan catering players and Hong Kong enterprises agreed on a proposed annual intended transaction volume of HK$30 million ($3.82 million). Travel agencies also inked deals on two‑way visitor exchanges to tap into each other’s tourism markets. To build a regular platform for exchanges, industry associations from the two sides signed a strategic cooperation agreement.
Peter Lam Kin-ngok, chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, said that with joint efforts by governments and industry players on both sides, the HKTB will continue to support deeper engagement between the cultural and tourism sectors of both places on visitor flows and tourism products.

It will help boost the popularity of Chaoshan across Hong Kong and overseas markets, while offering Hong Kong residents more high-quality short-haul travel destinations on the Chinese mainland, Lam added.
