Massive Infrastructure Damage Paralyzes UK and European Travel

Two powerful storms swept across the United Kingdom within days of each other, disrupting flights, trains, ferries and road travel just as autumn trips were underway.

Their effects extended beyond Britain, with strong winds also affecting air travel through Amsterdam and ferry services across northern Europe.

The worst of the weather has passed, but the travel disruption has not cleared.

For visitors with upcoming connections, rail journeys or coastal trips, the latest developments are more relevant than the weekend’s weather warnings alone.

84-mph Storms Sever ScotRail and Transport for Wales Routes

Storm Austen struck southern England on Friday, October 23, before Storm Boelo brought powerful winds and heavy rain to Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England over the weekend.

Gusts reached 84 mph in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, according to the Associated Press.

The Met Office’s main amber wind warning expired on Sunday evening, but damage to infrastructure is continuing to affect journeys.

National Rail’s update on Monday morning said residual disruption remained across several operators, including Northern, ScotRail and Transport for Wales.

In Scotland, the West Highland line and the Inverness to Thurso/Wick route were among those still affected as crews worked to clear fallen trees, repair overhead power lines and inspect damaged tracks.

Road closures also remain a concern. The A78 Shore Road between Skelmorlie and Largs in North Ayrshire was closed for urgent repairs after storm damage. Other roads have been affected by fallen trees, debris and flooding.

The Scottish Government’s Social Justice and Housing Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville warned that “Disruption to travel is likely to continue into tomorrow” in its October 25 update. Further poor weather is possible early this week, with additional wind warnings listed for parts of Scotland on Tuesday.

Passengers should check National Rail’s disruption updates and Traffic Scotland’s live travel information before setting out.

Amsterdam Schiphol Grounds Flights as CalMac Halts 23 Routes

The disruption spread across the North Sea as Storm Boelo moved into continental Europe.

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport warned on Sunday, October 25, that strong winds would reduce the number of flights able to take off and land. The airport advised passengers to expect delays and cancellations and to check their flight details with their airline before leaving for the airport.

Ferry services also experienced problems. In Scotland, CalMac reported disruption affecting 23 of its 30 services late Sunday, while some ferry sailings in northern Europe were canceled.

Western Ferries, which operates across the Firth of Clyde, announced that its service would resume on Monday, subject to the latest conditions.

Passengers traveling by ferry should confirm their sailing with the operator, especially when a crossing connects with a train, flight or hotel booking.
