Sportsbook operators have absorbed some of the biggest selling in the gambling group across 2026, and the pressure has landed hardest on the pure-play names. DraftKings (NASDAQ:DKNG) stock is rising 1% in afternoon trading, yet it’s still down 44% year to date (YTD) to $19.14. A modest lift like that leaves the bigger question open, which is whether the repricing has finally run its course.
Meanwhile, Flutter Entertainment (NYSE:FLUT) stock is down 65% YTD to $75.83, a larger slide than DraftKings shares have suffered. MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM) stock is down 20% YTD to $29.32, a far softer decline than DraftKings stock or Flutter stock has posted.
The Roundhill Sports Betting & iGaming ETF (NYSEARCA:BETZ), down 22% YTD to $16.47, shows a smaller loss than DraftKings stock has taken. By contrast, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is up 13% YTD to $771.55, so DraftKings stock has fallen sharply while the broad market has climbed. This divergence from SPY is central to the dead-money question for DraftKings stock.

Exchange Platforms Reach the Sportsbook Model
DraftKings stock has repriced across 2026 as prediction markets are taking share of U.S. sports gambling and pressuring the licensed operators. Exchange platforms outside the licensed sportsbook model drive that competition. It lands on operators such as DraftKings and Flutter and largely spares the casinos.
DraftKings earns a margin on the action it accepts. Under its current model, it also carries the marketing and state licensing costs that come with running a sportsbook. A competitor that channels the same sports pick through an exchange reaches that revenue directly, and each customer who makes that switch pulls margin away from DraftKings while its cost base stays in place.
Flutter stock and DraftKings stock falling far harder than MGM Resorts stock and the BETZ ETF separates the sportsbook operators from the wider gambling group. Still, MGM Resorts shares and BETZ have lost ground in 2026 so far, but at a much softer pace.
Case for a Bounce Versus Dead Money
The case for a bounce starts with how much bad news DraftKings stock may already reflect after most of a year of repricing for the exchange threat. If that pressure is largely priced in, even a stable share of handle could look better than the market expects. DraftKings also still runs the licensed sportsbook model that the exchanges compete against, so steady customer activity could shift the narrative.
Skeptics argue that exchange platforms can keep taking share, leaving DraftKings stock stuck even after its larger decline. Under that view, DraftKings keeps paying its marketing and state licensing bills while its revenue base shrinks. A larger slide in Flutter stock shows how hard the market can punish an operator facing the same competition.
Share of Handle Is the Next Test
DraftKings now faces the question of whether its share of handle steadies against the exchange platforms. Stabilization could support the bounce case, while further erosion may reinforce the dead-money view of DraftKings stock. Until that question resolves, DraftKings shares could keep trading as a proxy for the exchange threat.
Both readings of DraftKings stock fit the evidence, so the answer depends on how much patience each holder brings. Investors who lean toward the bounce case should keep their exposure moderate given how far DraftKings shares have fallen against a rising SPY ETF. Keeping one’s DKNG stock exposure smaller leaves room to rethink once the share question resolves.
