The race for the Scudetto and the drama of historic rivalries in the Peninsula are attracting more and more viewers abroad, as Lega Serie A confirmed in 2025, reporting an unprecedented surge in popularity across the United States.

“Never before has Italian football been so widely accessible across the country. The upcoming CBS Main Network broadcast of Juventus-Genoa on March 29 is yet another key moment in our mission to bring Serie A to as many fans as possible,” Lega Serie A President Ezio Maria Simonelli said back then.

“It’s incredible to see how much it’s grown, with broadcasts and events like this bringing fans even closer to the game,” added 2006 Italy World Cup winner Andrea Pirlo, a former Milan and Juventus superstar.

The strong community of Italian-Canadians, primarily concentrated in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, have also had a chance to see many Italian stars in action in the MLS in recent years.

Sebastian Giovinco played for Toronto FC from 2015 to 2019, followed, a few years later, by Federico Bernardeschi and Lorenzo Insigne, two Italy Euro 2020 winners.

Another Italian legend, Alessandro Nesta, played for Montreal Impact in 2012-13 after a successful Serie A career with Lazio and Milan, during which he had won three Serie A titles and two Champions League titles.

The former defender moved to the USA after hanging up his boots, becoming the coach of Miami FC from 2015 to 17. He then returned to Italy to take charge of Perugia, Frosinone, Reggiana and Monza.

Surely, there’s plenty of connection between Italian football and Canada, not just because over 1,500,000 Canadians (4.3% of the total population) have reported full or partial Italian ancestry, but also because of the many stars moving between the two countries to play the beautiful game.

Too bad that the two national teams’ proposed meeting in the 2026 World Cup Group B will never happen, as the Azzurri have failed to qualify for the competition for the third time in a row.
