Tom Cruise Miami Vice Villain Casting Rumor Gets Major Update

There’s been an update to the recent rumor that Tom Cruise would be playing a villain in the upcoming reboot of Miami Vice from Joseph Kosinski.

What’s the latest update on Tom Cruise’s rumored role in Miami Vice?

During the latest episode of The Ringer’s podcast The Big Picture, the topic of Cruise’s potential inclusion in the film was brought up. The rumor originally began circulating from insider Daniel Richtman, who simply noted that Cruise was being eyed to play the villain of the movie, which Michael Mann is also producing.

The topic was pretty quickly shut down by The Big Picture, though. Host Sean Fennessey was asked about it by guest Chris Ryan, and he and guest Bill Simmons quickly noted it didn’t “pass the sniff test.” Fennessey then said that the rumor had been “debunked” by a source close to him. They didn’t touch on it further than that, though, quickly casting it aside as nothing more than a rumor.

Currently, much of Kosinski’s upcoming reboot is unknown. Kosinski will work from a screenplay by Dan Gilroy, said to be based on Eric Warren Singer’s earlier draft. Dylan Clark joins Kosinski in producing the project. As for the cast, rumors have begun flying around that both Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are in talks to star, although nothing has been confirmed as of now.

Miami Vice originally began as a crime drama TV show that premiered in 1984. The series followed two detectives, James “Sonny” Crockett (Don Johnson) and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas), who were Metro-Dade Police Department detectives working undercover in Miami. The series ran for five seasons, and was critically praised for its uniqueness as a police procedural, where it was inspired heavily by and integrated the 1980s New Wave culture of the time.

The original series was created by Anthony Yerkovich, and executive produced by legendary filmmaker Michael Mann. Mann would later go on to direct his own adaptation of the project in 2006, in a movie that starred Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell as Tubbs and Crockett, respectively. That film was not well received upon its release, but has since grown into a cult classic for its stylized look and action sequences.

After directing the massive hit Top Gun: Maverick, Kosinski directed 2022’s Spiderhead for Netflix. Next up for the filmmaker is 2025’s F1, which stars Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, and is set to released on June 27, 2025.
