Hong Kong International Airport’s Terminal 2 (T2) will officially start welcoming passengers on May 27, 2026. The announcement was made by Airport Authority chairman Fred Lam during Lunar New Year celebrations, with Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan confirming that the Three-Runway System will also be fully operational.

The expanded departure facilities at Terminal 2 will feature upgraded check-in counters and integrated smart technologies aimed at improving passenger processing.

• Terminal 2 will primarily accommodate short-haul and regional airlines, including Hong Kong Airlines, HK Express, and Greater Bay Airlines, along with other flights to Southeast Asia.
• Long-haul and full-service flights will continue to operate from Terminal 1 to balance passenger traffic across terminals.
• The new departure facilities feature smart check-in kiosks, self-service baggage drops, and integrated technologies to streamline passenger processing.
• The terminal is projected to handle up to 15 million passengers by the end of 2026, with room for future expansion.

• While the full airside concourse and dedicated gates are expected to open in 2027, passengers can access T2 via the Airport Express, using the same platform as Terminal 1 with direct entry to the terminal.
• Buses, taxis, private cars, and coaches can drop passengers at the expanded landside zone, with clear signage guiding travellers from Terminal 1.
• Terminal 2 will also feature the 11 Skies retail and entertainment complex, turning the terminal into a destination beyond air travel.

• The expansion supports Hong Kong’s strategic role in the Greater Bay Area and its position as a leading global aviation and logistics hub, with access to 220 destinations served by 140 airlines. “Last year, passenger trips hit 61 million, up 15 per cent from 2024. Cargo throughput exceeded 5 million tonnes, a figure Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said puts Hong Kong in the running for the world’s busiest cargo airport for the 15th time,” reported South China Morning Post.

The redeveloped terminal is part of a HKD 141.5 billion three-runway expansion, marking the completion of a decade-long project to modernise the airport. Residents and travellers are advised to check airline updates to confirm whether check-in has moved to Terminal 2.
