Veteran Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon warned her fans about scammers using her name and likeness to commit fraud online. The Cruel Intentions star assured her fans that she would never ask for anything from anyone and warned them from ever engaging with anyone pretending to be her.
What Reese Witherspoon said about scammers
In a recent TikTok video, veteran actress Reese Witherspoon spoke about the surge of scammers online who were using her likeness to try to extract money from users online.
In the video she uploaded on TikTok, Witherspoon said, “Hey, this is important, I want to just tell you what I’ve been dealing with for the past 24 hours.” She continued, “There are multiple people on TikTok and Instagram impersonating me, and they go into people’s DMs, and they try to build a relationship, they try to extract personal information, plan meet up times.”
This is the kind of scam that has become increasingly common over the past few years, especially with fraudsters impersonating famous celebrities to gain the upper hand.
“I want you to know, this is not me. And it’s so upsetting that people would use my name to manipulate people, but I want you to know that I would never, ever manipulate you,” Witherspoon continued. She further asserted that she “would never reach out to you for money, for private information, to create a meet up time.”
She concluded the video, saying, “If somebody’s talking to you, this is not just me. This is happening across the board, but it’s really upsetting to me that this is happening on such a large scale. So please be careful out there, and please know, I would never, never reach out to you to manipulate you or take anything from you, okay.”
Previously, other celebrities like Sandra Bullock, Johnny Depp, and Tom Hanks have also spoken out about scams happening using their likeness.
